Review

"The book is written from a rich store of knowledge and experience, and can claim a distinctive place among its several predecessors. The author's main objective in marshalling her material is a plea for the development of the consciousness, not only for the purpose of achieving a fuller life but also as an ethical task."--The Journal of Analytical Psychology

In the early 1920's, Esther Harding began working with C.G. Jung and in the following decades she put his insights and theories to the test in her own analytical practice. This book was compiled from lectures she gave in the early 1960's and is intended for the general reader who has an interest in Jung's fundamental ideas but who may not be prepared at the moment to follow Jung into the depths of his deep, dark woods.

The material is organized into chapters that cover the basic Jungian themes: The Shadow, The Anima and the Animus, The Participation Mystique, The Archetypal Figures, The Psychological Aspects of Metaphysical Reality. The writing is as clear and as simple as the ideas will allow. The book traces the development of consciousness from childhood onward, and gives examples of the challenges we all face as we struggle through the individuation process. It offers encouragement that it is indeed possible to fully integrate the opposing forces that are at work in us--both the conscious factors and the unconscious elements that seem to determine so much of our behavior.

Like Marie Louise von Franz, Esther Harding is very good at clarifying the complications of Jung's thought. If you have ever found yourself fascinated but absolutely lost in the forest while reading Jung this book will lay down a trail for you through the tangle, and will help you avoid some very common psychological pitfalls. It might not lead you directly to the bright clearing of the Self, but it can at least offer a rationale for undertaking the journey, while positing an idea of the goal, and providing a map that is clearly drawn and carefully marked.

Whatever age where you feel a transition occurring, Harding helps you through it by highlighting person-hood and your uniqueness. Easy to read and follow, she takes you through many of Carl Jung's concepts that can assist a college student, a bereaved spouse or a 40 year old who feels 80. Excellent book.
