I read some of the reviews about this, and how picture discs often suffer from bad audio quality. But, I decided to reserve judgement and roll the dice. Since the Iron Maiden clan have not seen fit to give us an audiophile release of these records on heavy black vinyl, this is pretty much the only option for a new record of these old recordings. My copy of NOTB is unplayable. Side 2 that begins with the song Number of the Beast, and the spoken word intro has so much surface noise that you CAN BARELY HEAR THE ACTOR'S VOICE! I'm not joking. It sounds like some serious swishing tunnel was added into the recording. When the music kicks in, it really suffers from the surface noise, and the songs just sound like a big mess. No punch, no power, no dynamics, just distortion. Super disappointed. In fact the quality is so poor, that I am reticent to sell it on ebay, and will probably try and trade it in at a local record store. I can't return it to the store I bought it from. That was on ebay from Canada, and I'm not going through that. They didn't do anything wrong. I blame IM for releasing sub par recordings.
I give it 2 stars because the packaging looks great, but if it's unlistenable, what good is it?

"The Number Of The Beast" is an absolute classic, a landmark album in music/rock/metal history. And this reissue is an absolute disaster, with the classic cover printed in wrong colors, and the audio victimized by the infamous "loudness war" (Google the expression if you don't know what it means), with the music having been turned into one big mass of distorted noise. I did a full audio analysis of the whole album and just can't understand how the band's label could have let this precious material fall into the hands of inept audio engineers capable of producing something this amateurish.

Add to that the inclusion of track "Total Eclipse" - which was not part of the original vinyl or even the first CD releases - between tracks "Gangland" and "Hallowed Be Thy Name", something that completely breaks the perfect continuity of the album. That track only started to appear in the 1995 reissues and in a separate bonus disc.

I wonder if the band had any say in these "enhanced" releases. Avoid this thing and buy an older, non-enhanced and non-remastered CD edition of the album if you want to hear how this masterpiece is really supposed to sound. Shame on EMI for releasing this insult to the band and their fans.

Being a huge maiden fan, I had to get some Iron Maiden vinyl in my collection. I mean, the sound can not be that bad, can it? Well, I bought Number of the Beast and Somewhere in time. What I am left with is basically 70 bucks worth of conversation pieces and decorations. Yeah, they look cool, but hard to listen to. As one reviewer said, there is like a swishing tunnel noise present through the whole record. I am no audiophile, but after listening to re-issues of Priest (Back On Black series) and the Metallica pressings from Mobile Fidelity, and even original pressing vinyl from the 80's, these recordings hurt my ears. I am bummed out. I implore Maiden to re-issue their greatness on regular black vinyl .. please. Needless to say, I can not buy anymore of these Maiden albums as much as I love the music. I should of heeded the warning on sound quality, but I could not help myself. Tempted to trade these in for store credit at my local music shop, for a third of what I paid im sure. Two stars I guess for the cool looking discs. One reviewer said the sound is excellent, I suggest he check his hearing

The remastering for this CD is simply horrible. The sound is totally distorted. If you have access to the vynil or even the original CD you'll know what I mean. Otherwise, this CD should deserve five stars. But it is so mangled I can hardly listen to it, unless in a low volume (so it won't distort so much).

The album is six stars, let's just get that out of the way. However, these albums sound terrible as all picture discs do. I was really hoping their habit of releasing everything on picture disc would be limited to newer releases however, this is not the case. I listened to one these at a local record store (they were playing one to marvel at how bad it was) and was not suprised at how bad it sounded.

Nothing else needs to be said, do not buy these if you prefer reasonably priced, high quaulity vinyl. Sadly, they will probably never release a decent, new set of these albums on black, 180G vinyl. Enjoy hanging these on your walls, that is all they're good for in my opinion.

To all those negative reviewers maybe check the equipment that you're using to play these because I just purchased all eight of these picture discs and they play and sound great. I may suggest also purchasing the UK editions on the EMI label as I am not sure if the U.S. releases are using the same masters but I feel that these sound very close to the originals while not exact still very close. I also still have the original Iron Maiden and Seventh son on cd and these vinyl sound just as good. Unless I just happened to get some diamonds in the rough and all the rest are poor pressings check the source your using for playback.
