Book Description

April 6, 2007 1558327207 978-1558327207 6th
Breastfeeding is natural, but it is not entirely instinctive for either mothers or babies. The Nursing Mother’s Companion has been among the best-selling books on breastfeeding for 25 years, and is respected and recommended by professionals and well loved by new parents for its encouraging and accessible style. Kathleen Huggins equips breastfeeding mothers with all the information they need to overcome potential difficulties and nurse their babies successfully from the first week through the toddler years, or somewhere in between.
This fully updated and extensively revised edition provides new information on topics such as:
• Nursing after a cesarean
• How to resume breastfeeding after weaning (relactation)
• Nursing a “near-term” (3–to–5 weeks premature) baby
• Treating postpartum headaches and nausea
• Nutritional supplements to alleviate postpartum depression
• Sharing a baby with baby (co-sleeping) and the risk of SIDS
• Introducing solid foods
• Expressing, storing, and feeding breast milk
• Reviews of breast pumps
Readers will also find Huggins’s indispensable problem-solving “survival guides,” set off by colored bands on the pages for quick reference, as well as appendices on determining baby’s milk needs in the first six weeks and the safety of various drugs during breast-feeding. Now more than ever, The Nursing Mother’s Companion is the go-to guide every new mother should have at hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise resource for this first time mom December 28, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I got this book when my baby was about 6 weeks old. I wish I had had it while I was pregnant. The breastfeeding references recommended to me spent too much time preaching that one should breastfeed. I needed much less WHY since I had already determined that I would do it and much more of the HOW. This book gives the HOW in clear, straightforward language. If you run into any problems, this book gives you the steps to work through them. It also has up-to-date reviews of products like pumps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent breasfeeding reference book! December 21, 2010
By JenV
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I ordered this book because it was so highly recommended in our breastfeeding and childbirth preparation classes, but was not exactly thrilled to have yet another breastfeeding book to read. However, it turned out to be a very good purchase, and I would definitely recommend this book to any soon to be or new to breastfeeding parents.

Overall, I was very pleased with this purchase. This book contains lots of helpful information for the preparation of a new baby as well as understanding breastfeeding and all that it will entail. As a first time mom, I found this book very helpful in preparing me mentally for the job of breastfeeding as well as helping me understand all of the benefits that will come along with that for myself and my baby. I also think that it provides lots of helpful information for overcoming common obstacles and problem solutions. The format it is written in, is very easy to follow and very organized, yet still simple.

It provides important medical information in a way that is easy to read and understand without being too cumbersome. It also helps new parents understand what is normal, and what is cause for concern. I would recommend this book to any new parents or any parents that want a good reference manual written by the leading breastfeeding experts in the country.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite of all the BF books I read. January 5, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I checked out several books on breastfeeding from my library and Le Leche League chapter. This one is by far the best. It was the only one I bought for myself after returning the loaners. After breastfeeding for four months, I still find myself referring back to it for random questions and always get answers. I just loaned it to another new mom after I thought I was "done" with it, and I am finding myself already wanting my reference book back! A definite must-have for new moms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Confidence Builder November 14, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My OBGYN recommended this book to me when I told her I was going to breastfeed. The book is very informational and gave my a lot of confidence when I started breastfeeding. It is an easy read and I would recommend reading it prior to delivering your baby so that you know what to expect before you start breastfeeding. I read most of it prior to delivery and brought it to the hospital with me as a resource. My lactation consultant was impressed by my lack of frustration when I began feeding my daughter. Breastfeeding is all about confidence and this book will definitely give that to you. It provides a lot of information and great tips for various issues you can encounter when breastfeeding.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE FOR NEW NURSING MOTHERS!!! August 20, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a first-time mom, I got this book to help with understanding life with my new baby and breastfeeding fundamentals. This book was an incredible companion as I struggled with those first few weeks and months, and I highly recommend it for anyone considering breastfeeding their baby. Make sure you get the book before baby comes though - I didn't have it until 3 weeks post partum, and I think it might have made life much easier from the beginning if I read it before my baby was born.

It's easy to read, and full of relevant information - a must-have for the new mom's bookshelf!

This was the fourth breastfeeding book that I bought, and I found this one to be the most helpful. I didn't feel that this book judged me, but instead told me the facts and let the decision making about how long/often/etc. I was going to breastfeed up to me. It didn't get into philosophy too much at all, which was great because I didn't really need to know the WHY of breastfeeding by the time I started -- just the HOW. As another reviewer aptly said, "clear and concise." There is a list of drugs in the back that was helpful to consult -- like whether I could take certain allergy medicines, headache medicines, etc., though of course it's always best to consult your doctor.

5.0 out of 5 stars I gone to this book to many time to remember February 10, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The information is this book is complete and concise. Any question my wife and I could think of was in the book. The most valuable section of the book is by far the drug interactions section. Almost all over the counter and prescription drugs can be looked up to see the affects they will have on your baby as well as how much of the drug will be passed to your baby through the breast milk.

3.0 out of 5 stars Please get a decent editor January 5, 2012
By A. Kay
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book is a good resource, and I'm glad to have it. The number of errors in the text makes me wonder if there has been an editor involved for all 6 editions? How can there be so many mistakes? There are times when you have to sit there and figure out what she must have meant in the second half of a curious, poorly edited sentence. Personal pet peeve, I'm sure, but extremely frustrating, especially in the first half of the book. I was reading the kindle version. I don't know if the paper version is better.

The book is fairly repetitive in parts, but if you are using it as a reference later, it won't be an issue.

I didn't think her discussion of breastfeeding out in the world was very inspirational or helpful. Did she actually suggest breastfeeding my baby in a restroom? It would have been nice to see her champion for confidant women who know the value of breastfeeding and who won't be hiding in the public restroom or in the bedroom when family is around. I'm not opposed to discretion. I just didn't think she did much to make a new nursing mom feel excited or confidant about leaving the house.
