5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise resource for this first time mom December 28, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I got this book when my baby was about 6 weeks old. I wish I had had it while I was pregnant. The breastfeeding references recommended to me spent too much time preaching that one should breastfeed. I needed much less WHY since I had already determined that I would do it and much more of the HOW. This book gives the HOW in clear, straightforward language. If you run into any problems, this book gives you the steps to work through them. It also has up-to-date reviews of products like pumps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent breasfeeding reference book! December 21, 2010
By JenV
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I ordered this book because it was so highly recommended in our breastfeeding and childbirth preparation classes, but was not exactly thrilled to have yet another breastfeeding book to read. However, it turned out to be a very good purchase, and I would definitely recommend this book to any soon to be or new to breastfeeding parents.

Overall, I was very pleased with this purchase. This book contains lots of helpful information for the preparation of a new baby as well as understanding breastfeeding and all that it will entail. As a first time mom, I found this book very helpful in preparing me mentally for the job of breastfeeding as well as helping me understand all of the benefits that will come along with that for myself and my baby. I also think that it provides lots of helpful information for overcoming common obstacles and problem solutions. The format it is written in, is very easy to follow and very organized, yet still simple.

It provides important medical information in a way that is easy to read and understand without being too cumbersome. It also helps new parents understand what is normal, and what is cause for concern. I would recommend this book to any new parents or any parents that want a good reference manual written by the leading breastfeeding experts in the country.

5.0 out of 5 stars I gone to this book to many time to remember February 10, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The information is this book is complete and concise. Any question my wife and I could think of was in the book. The most valuable section of the book is by far the drug interactions section. Almost all over the counter and prescription drugs can be looked up to see the affects they will have on your baby as well as how much of the drug will be passed to your baby through the breast milk.

3.0 out of 5 stars good if you have no other resources August 25, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A lot of this book covers areas before your pregnancy and why breastfeeding is good which for someone who has already had the baby and decided to breastfeed most of the book is not needed. I wish it gave more specifics on when to pump and how often, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite of all the BF books I read. January 5, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I checked out several books on breastfeeding from my library and Le Leche League chapter. This one is by far the best. It was the only one I bought for myself after returning the loaners. After breastfeeding for four months, I still find myself referring back to it for random questions and always get answers. I just loaned it to another new mom after I thought I was "done" with it, and I am finding myself already wanting my reference book back! A definite must-have for new moms.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great reference January 31, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I got this book because it was recommended to me by the lactation consultant at the hospital, and it has been very helpful to me. It is broken down into stages of breast feeding and addresses many problems that come with nursing your baby, and the steps to deal with these situations. A real help when you are trouble shooting a nursing situation. It also gives reviews of pumps and would be very helpful when choosing a pump, which I wish I had seen before I purchased my pump. Over all I have recommended this book to several friends that are considering breast feeding, and still reference it sometimes now that I'm in a different stage of nursing with an 8 month old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands Down The BEST book on Breastfeeding! May 17, 2012
Format:Paperback
I have successfully breastfed all four of my children with the help of this book. Each infant is different and though one may take to breastfeeding like a champ the next child may struggle and struggle. This was my experience as my first son came from the womb knowing just what to do where as my second son took six weeks to finally get it down. I owned both the La Leche breastfeeding book and this book and I sent the La Leche book to the Goodwill. The Nursing Mother's Companion is so well organized that a tired, frustrated, exhausted, and worried new mother can easily find the information she needs to successfully breastfeed. The illustrations are helpful and clear. In addition to the longer chapters covering each stage there are short condensed survival guides for the many different stages of breastfeeding making this book a cinch to navigate when you need a quick answer! There is a reason that this book has stuck around for 25 years!!
