I got this book when my baby was about 6 weeks old. I wish I had had it while I was pregnant. The breastfeeding references recommended to me spent too much time preaching that one should breastfeed. I needed much less WHY since I had already determined that I would do it and much more of the HOW. This book gives the HOW in clear, straightforward language. If you run into any problems, this book gives you the steps to work through them. It also has up-to-date reviews of products like pumps.

I ordered this book because it was so highly recommended in our breastfeeding and childbirth preparation classes, but was not exactly thrilled to have yet another breastfeeding book to read. However, it turned out to be a very good purchase, and I would definitely recommend this book to any soon to be or new to breastfeeding parents.

Overall, I was very pleased with this purchase. This book contains lots of helpful information for the preparation of a new baby as well as understanding breastfeeding and all that it will entail. As a first time mom, I found this book very helpful in preparing me mentally for the job of breastfeeding as well as helping me understand all of the benefits that will come along with that for myself and my baby. I also think that it provides lots of helpful information for overcoming common obstacles and problem solutions. The format it is written in, is very easy to follow and very organized, yet still simple.

It provides important medical information in a way that is easy to read and understand without being too cumbersome. It also helps new parents understand what is normal, and what is cause for concern. I would recommend this book to any new parents or any parents that want a good reference manual written by the leading breastfeeding experts in the country.

Side note: I have not read through this entire book. Will update my review in a few months. So far, here is what I think: I agree with other reviewers who mentioned that this book is a great reference if one does not have access to online BF info or other books. I am expecting our firstborn in a couple weeks and have read through the first few chapters of this. My intent on purchasing this book was to have something to refer to should problems arise during BF. Also to feel encouraged about BF in those moments I may feel like giving up. My issue so far is the advice on several different problems appears to be fairly the same, repetitive. Perhaps a detailed chart with problems and solutions would've been good enough, look more organized, easier to find. Another reason I gave it 3 stars is because, as others have mentioned, I do not find the tone of this book very encouraging, empowering, positive. Nor does it give a balanced perspective. It has a sort of "scare tactic" approach...which some people may appreciate or not...For me that is both good and bad. After just reading the first few chapters and everything that could possibly go wrong in BF the first two months plus the great detail about how practically any kind of medical intervention during labor can potentially ruin those first few moments of BF your newborn and how challenging it can be to make up for it, I began to feel paranoid instead of excited about BF. I thought "Oh wow, next time I ought to hire a doula, go all natural, or deliver at home or a birthing center or else my BF experience will be doomed!"...Sounds dramatic, but that's really what I thought. I do appreciate that it encourages to seek professional help/an LC and talk to others. Being a first time overly confident mom, I needed to hear this and be humbled...Read more ›

This was the fourth breastfeeding book that I bought, and I found this one to be the most helpful. I didn't feel that this book judged me, but instead told me the facts and let the decision making about how long/often/etc. I was going to breastfeed up to me. It didn't get into philosophy too much at all, which was great because I didn't really need to know the WHY of breastfeeding by the time I started -- just the HOW. As another reviewer aptly said, "clear and concise." There is a list of drugs in the back that was helpful to consult -- like whether I could take certain allergy medicines, headache medicines, etc., though of course it's always best to consult your doctor.

The information is this book is complete and concise. Any question my wife and I could think of was in the book. The most valuable section of the book is by far the drug interactions section. Almost all over the counter and prescription drugs can be looked up to see the affects they will have on your baby as well as how much of the drug will be passed to your baby through the breast milk.

My OBGYN recommended this book to me when I told her I was going to breastfeed. The book is very informational and gave my a lot of confidence when I started breastfeeding. It is an easy read and I would recommend reading it prior to delivering your baby so that you know what to expect before you start breastfeeding. I read most of it prior to delivery and brought it to the hospital with me as a resource. My lactation consultant was impressed by my lack of frustration when I began feeding my daughter. Breastfeeding is all about confidence and this book will definitely give that to you. It provides a lot of information and great tips for various issues you can encounter when breastfeeding.
