I really enjoyed and highly recommend "The OMG Chronicles: One Man's Quest to Discover God Means to People All Over the World" by Peter Rodger. Rodger traveled across the world to 23 countries to try and gain an understanding of what God means to different people/religions and why those differences can cause such chaos at times. I watched the movie after reading the book and I loved finding the people I read about in the book to see how different (or similar) they looked and behaved to my imaginings.

It's a frustratingly simple question with as many different answers as there are beliefs on the planet. I found the opinions and locations fascinating and mind boggling at times. For example, the gun shop owners in Texas who felt that the only way to salvation was through Jesus Christ. Interesting, especially considering that we tend to stick with the religion we were born into, so were some of us chosen and others not? I guess we won't know for sure until we die. I'm sure at that point it will be the ultimate ahha moment but we can only share it with those that already had one too!

I guess my favorite answer is still the simplest. "God is love." Even if we find out he's not, it's better to love the world and the people in it (including ourselves) than to hate.

Peter Rodger's book is an interesting read and I highly recommend his laid back style and quest for an answer. Rodger's open mindedness and curiosity shines through. He lets the narrative and those being interviewed do the talking because no one knows the answer for certain. He allows us to form our own opinion. And we won't know if the correct answer was given until it's too late to let anyone on the planet know!

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book and the movie from the publisher to review. The opinions are my own and in no way reflect the opinion of the publisher.

Peter Rodger explores the world and the hearts of humanity in his quest to understand why religions wage war against each other in the name of God.
Frustrated by the growing divisiveness after September 11th 2001, Rodger takes a leap of faith leaving the comfort of corporate ad contracts and family life, to seek believers and non-believers across the planet and ask this simple question: "What is God?"

His original intention to create a documentary film expands to include this fascinating book recording many compelling stories beyond what can be contained within the film. These stories take the reader on a journey that is inclusive of all sorts of diverse opinions and beliefs, in a rare and unbiased manner encouraging us to see the concept of God through other's eyes.

From aboriginal wisdom, to major world religions and their factions, to atheists and agnostics, Rodger witnesses their convictions about God and faces his own questions along the way. He interviews people in cities, villages, churches and politically sensitive remote locations, to hear why they believe what they do about God, religion, paradise and hell.

Reading this book will open your mind to a deeper understanding of the complexity of the human need to define and align with a power greater than ourselves, and the dangers inherent in believing in one path to enlightenment . Most important, it will inspire you to answer the question for yourself; "What is God?"

The companion DVD "OH MY GOD" is resplendent with breath-taking footage of the most beautiful places in the world, touring 23 countries and meeting people who will make you laugh, and cry and at times, shudder with amazement at the depth of their belief that their version of God compels them to separation or violence.

"What is God?"

This is the question filmmaker/photographer Peter Rodger travelled around the world to ask. He had to ask the question--it burned inside his being. Starting with "a camera and a hat," his initial salvo into this film was a travesty. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Then he was convinced he had to make this film. Such are the ways of Spirit, or God.

From Beverly Hills to Bali, from the Maori to the Maasai, Rodger asked his question over and over again until I was fuming at the film. The God he was seeking was God the Father, and I, for one, feel strongly that we've sought Him quite enough.

Person after person in the film referred to God as He, Him. But then I started to listen a little more closely. Their answers were all about an energy of space and being--a.k.a. the feminine aspect of Deity. Consider these:

Actor Hugh Jackman says, "It's the space, the space between words."

The feminine aspect of God is the space in which creation happens.

An Israeli rabbi says, "God is between us."

Again, space.

Another cleric says, "God is glue."

What connects us.

Rodger cites four reasons to believe:

1. We have no idea how we got here ... God the Creator.
2. Good deeds buy us a place in heaven ... God the Policeman.
3. Fear of death ... God the Giver of Eternal Life.
4. When things go wrong, it's God's will ... God as Scapegoat.

Maybe, say I.

How's this for a reason to trump all other reasons?

It's easier to believe in God than not to.

The OMG Chronicles is a companion diary telling the best and worst of the stories of the process. If it were a film, it would be a film about making the film.
