Customer Reviews

Very informative and interesting.
Sammicat
The Old Farmers Almanac is full of great information about the weather, when to plant crops, astrology and many other subjects too numerous to mention.
Dee
You can either read it from start to finish, or simply pick it up and read a few interesting tidbits at a time.

This is going right back to Amazon.

I bought this for my 8 year old son for Christmas. I was excited to flip through it and check everything out when I noticed that on practically every page, there are advertisements. I saw weight loss drugs, male enhancement drugs, marital aids...you name it. I don't understand why I paid $13 for a book of ads with facts as filler. And I didn't see this mentioned in other reviews. Am I missing some knowledge about this almanac or almanacs in general? I'm scrambling now to find something different. SUPER UNHAPPY.

****Please note that this review is for the paperback version ~ I do not recommend purchasing the Kindle version, unless you have the Kindle Fire HD or an iPad, as it's too difficult to read the astronomical charts, etc. The Kindle Fire HD and iPad allow for zooming, thus the almanac will look fine on those devices****

This is the 222nd edition of The Old Farmer's Almanac. Published in the beautiful, yet tiny town of Dublin, NH, the almanac is the most well known publication of Yankee Publishing Incorporated. The almanac remains much the same as it did when it was first introduced.

The first time that I had the opportunity to read The Old Farmer's Almanac was back in 1963, when it was given to me by my sister for my birthday. Since then; I've purchased it every single year, always waiting in anticipation for its arrival. I have a keen interest in Meteorology, so the first thing that I look for are the weather forecasts, which are broken up into several different regions across the United States. The publisher claims an 80% accuracy rate for their forecasts, which I feel is a bit of a stretch. I suppose if you were to view them in the most general and vaguest of terms, their claim may be accurate. On the other hand, I certainly would not base any daily activities on them, as in that regard the accuracy drops to a very low level. With that aside; it's still fun to hear what they have to say about the overall winter outlook for the country. Science hasn't reached the point where it's possible to forecast the weather a year or more in advance, so I take their information with a grain of salt. General trends such as El Niño and La Niña can have dramatic effects on weather, but being able to forecast a single day or week at a time, a year in advance isn't possible.

I'm sure there is SOME kind of information in here somewhere, the problem is 90% of the 'Almanac' appears to be advertisements.

I'm just going to send this back. Every page is an ad. Dumpy weight-loss picture ads, sex aids, penis enlargement pills, survival food storage, button makers, you name it.

Disappointing that such a well-known and acclaimed product is really nothing but ads.

I'm probably not the right target for this article, and I don't mean to offend anyone but I think this is really not what I was expecting.
I was expecting a book with a lot of tips and useful info on gardening.
I received a book riddled with horrible geriatric advertising and futile weather and horoscope and astrological "data".
Absolutely useless to me.

I just received my (paperback) copy of THE OLD FARMER'S ALMANAC for 2014, and as usual can't keep my hands off its 304 pages. As in years past, it is an entertaining compendium of traditional and modern. The weather predictions, which begin in November, may or may not shake out as Winter progresses, but the geographical zones this Almanac covers are healthily realistic: "Lower Lakes," which includes my region of Northern Illinois, also embraces Milwaukee and Michigan and our weather has much more in common than the part of Southern Illinois that plunges down toward Kentucky and Missouri. There are ads for heritage-seed keepers, Burpee tomatoes and lucky amulets. Wonderfully informative articles include "How to Hook 'Em" (the seven most problematic sport fish, including Northern Pike, Walleye and Brown Trout), and "The Twilight Zone: Meteor Showers." My favorite article, though, is "How to Get Bitten by a Pet," which despite the sardonic title tells you what not to do, of course.

There are astrological tables to help you plant under favorable conditions, and of course astronomical charts and manual tables for time and tide correction. Sometimes this is a point of controversy, so I will mention that this version is "trued" for Boston, Massachusetts, and it's probably the same version Amazon sends out across the entire USA. I personally would stay away from the Kindle version, as there's no little hole to hang it in the outhouse for casual reading.

The book itself is good but the charts on the kinde is worthless. Their too small to read and it wouldn't let you enlarge them. So if you need the charts don't get it on the kinde. I'm going to try and get my money back!!

Lots of ads(irrelevant ads) fill this book. It's hard to find information that you need. I am getting ads for gardening and home improvement in the mail box every day and they go to trash bin. I cannot believe you can even sell it for money.

Every single table and chart is too small to see and they don't zoom or expand on any device I own. That is almost the entire reason I buy this almanac. I will end up buying a paper version as well as this version is partially unusable or me. :( ----it zooms now. I don't know how or why, but it does. now perfect.
