Editorial Reviews

Review

"Dr. William Sears has the unique gift of being both an excellent physician and a great communicator. In The Omega-3 Effect, he offers practical, easy-to-understand yet authoritative advice written with humor, intelligence, insight, and clarity. Dr. Sears is one of the few physicians who actually is well-versed in accurate nutrition information and always is a good resource for putting know-how into practice."―Elizabeth Somer, RD, author of Eat Your Way to Sexy and Food & Mood

There is so much information about Omega-3s out there that I was absolutely confused, especially about DHA and EPA, but kept hearing that it was important for our diet. Well, I am not confused anymore and understand the importance. This book was a good read and amazingly, Dr. Sears was able to take the most complicated scientific information and make it understandable in layman's terms, with some great analogies and illustrations. Most important, it gives a roadmap for getting the right balance of Omega-3s and Omega-6s for all types of people who want to just feel and think better.

It is a super useful educational source although much has been researched even in the short time since it was written - no mention of algal sources useful for vegetarians or the high ALA in Chia seeds (more than in flax seeds and more easily digested and absorbed. - tastes way better too). The drawings are fun. Lots of good chats, lists and references. If only fish he so highly recommends weren't contaminated just about everywhere and getting scarce.

I have become more aware of the benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids as they pertain to overall better health, and love how this book corroborates its information in making its priceless points. Both doctors have done a wonderful job explaining why this is so.

"Make it fun!" is what I heard Dr. Sears say at a conference I attended about Omega Threes recently. His new book takes a complete and fun look at what can often be a complicated and confusing topic - Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids. I have read many, many books about Omega-3s, but this work is not only complete and comprehensive, but it is approachable for the non-technical or non-medical practitioner type that wants to learn more about the essential need of our bodies for Omega-3 fats. Dr. Sears sprinkles his book with some whimsical cartoons and illustrations to help reinforce his points. He's got a way about taking this subject and making it understandable for the common person. If you are thinking of taking Omega-3s for your health, or you have a dear friend or family member that could use a nudge to improve their health, this is the book.

Negatives? Well, perhaps some of the scientific biological explanations are not 100% accurate, and generalize some physiological functions to simplify the concepts that Dr. Sears is attempting to get across.

Also, Dr. Sears strongly advocates in eating a certain number of servings of Salmon per week. Salmon is truly a marvelous food, but if you study more about fishery science and management, there simply aren't enough salmon in the world for all of us to eat 2-4 6oz servings each week. Farmed salmon are not a solution, because they use other wild-caught fish for their feed. He seems to gloss over the possibility for other fish, like sardines, fresh anchovy, mackerel, herring, and other small fish that are high in Omegas and are much more sustainable and cheaper on a nutritional basis than Salmon. Aside from these two small points, I believe that this book will do much to transform the health of those who take the time to read it.

I had no idea how important Omegas are till I read this book. I also talked to a well known pediatrician and he highly recommends them for children's concentration as well.
