I'm off on a 2 week sailing adventure in the Caribbean (my 1st!) and bought this book so I'd be of some use in the galley. The book was originally written for campers/backpackers. The forward has been re-written to include stove types and cooking techniques on a boat. However, other than the forward, I assume none of the recipes have been changed from the original version as there are no fish recipes! There is a cooking chart at the front of the book that gives cooking times for fish and shellfish but among the recipes there is not a single seafood recipe. Several of the recipes could probably be re-worked to use fish instead of poultry or beef but the author offers no suggestions on how to do this. Now, as a newcomer to the sailing world, perhaps I am naïve but I'm expecting fish to be a major food source on this trip. Even near shore I expect we will find it easier to purchase seafood than Cornish game hens. The recipes that are in the book look yummy but I sure won't be taking this book on our trip.

I'm not cooking on a boat, but take frequent motorcycle trips. we have small room to pack and one burner. I was looking for other recipes that would be easy with my one burner and *very* limited cooking gear.

This book gave great tips on maximizing limited packing space (I changed my 2 quart pan to a 5 quart); good things to pack and had some great recipes.

I'm very happy with this book--and will look at some of the author's other authorings...

Simple recipes for limited galley cooking for two. Read in the intro about how the book started out as a backpacker's meal guide. Initial chapter includes information on stovetop cooking and equipment, and provisioning for a weekend boat trip. Ingredient lists are short and frequently utilize prepared or packaged options, which can be great for on-board refrigeration concerns. Seems that the second half of the book focuses on oven-prepared food, so smaller boats without built-in propane ovens have to rely on dockside power sources for portable units -- which hasn't been a problem for us while cruising Puget Sound in Washington. Recipes lend themselves to adaptation and also can be easily doubled or tripled for more people, if you have the cooking space to do so. Endless ideas for chicken, and a number of vegetarian options. The cover has extended flaps that can function like bookmarks, and the spiral binding allows the book to lie flat in any position and open to a single page. Compact-size recipe book for a small galley.

Turned my Sailboat into a Gourmet Restaurant. I also use it at home. Great for a single person, living alone who doesn't want to make a project out of every meal !

.
I bought this book to get some ideas about setting up a galley for camping and RV trips with my ex and her boys. And we used to try out the recipes at home....actually, we never did try any of these on the road. Hmmm.

Well, I am sure they would work...

Anyway, this is a great book for setting up small galley and throwing down some serious chow. The recipes and the prep recommendations work for asphalt sailors as well as the deep-water folks....except you get to stop and pickup anything you forgot.

If you need a recommendation for your "ONE-PAN". I like:Lodge Logic 3-Quart Pre-Seasoned Chicken Fryer. Ya' just ca't beat cast iron cookware.

This is an excellent book. It not only contains fantastic recipes, but also has excellent information for every galley -- on your boat, rv, or in the home!

It is a very useful book not only for those who are cruising on a boat but also for others from those who are traveling light on a motorcycle or on foot to tight budget students.
