4.0 out of 5 stars For fans of "Major Crush" - December 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was very similar in flavor to Major Crush (Romantic Comedies (Mass Market)) in its juvenile themes and romance. I have previously enjoyed Echols' "Romantic Comedies" such as The Ex Games (Romantic Comedies) and The Boys Next Door (Simon Romantic Comedies) but I much prefer her more intense romance novels Forget You, Love Story and especially Going Too Far. So while I enjoyed Echols' writing and romance, this story is suited for the younger YA reader.

Gemma and Addison have made the Majorette Squad their junior year and meet a couple of cute football players from a rival high school while at athletic camp. Gemma, who has lost almost 50 lbs to make the team has always been the servant to Addison's "master" role so when Addison decides she likes Max, the guy Gemma thought was interested in her, Gemma doesn't argue with her. Addison is not a nice girl and will try to humiliate Gemma to make herself look better. Max's friend Carter is interested in Addison, but since she has claimed Max, she pushes Gemma in Carter's lap. Gemma doesn't want to go along with it, but it means she can spend time with Max who still seems to be flirting with her.

This story has a lot of different themes it tries to address: the cheating father who left, the emotionally absent mom, the conniving best friend, self-esteem, jealousy and first love. The characters all have distinct personalities and are fun to read about, but Max's ability to psychoanalyze Gemma seems a little incredible. Also, the action only takes place on the weekends as if people who are dating would not call or text each other at all during the week. That just seemed improbable.

There is no doubt that Jennifer Echols is a fantastic writer and I have enjoyed reading all of her books. If you liked Major Crush, you will like this book too.

Would I/Did I buy it? Yes (6.99)
Would I read it again? Maybe
Would I recommend it to friends? Yes

5.0 out of 5 stars I RECOMMEND IT! December 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved The One That I Want by Jennifer Echols. I ABSOFREAKINLUTELY LOVED IT!

The One That I Want was filled with genuine high school issues and drama. It's been almost ten years since I graduated from high school, and I adored this novel! Young adults who are still in high school will relate to this story the most, but anyone can enjoy and appreciate this novel.

The characters in this novel are SPECTACULAR!

Gemma is SENSATIONAL! Her voice, personality and humor light up the pages of this novel. She's a positive and powerful main character. She's inspiring.

Max is ONE OF A KIND! He is superstitious. He is blunt. His honest and straight forward personality gets him into trouble sometimes, but that's my favorite thing about his character. He also has very good insight and advice - even though it's not always wanted.

Unfortunately there really are girls and guys out there like Addison and Carter. You may know the type. They are selfish, attention-starved, and cut throat. They want things only because someone else wanted them first. They make jokes at their "friends" expense. They like to embarrass and belittle their "friends." Addison and Carter are that type. They aren't nice, but they are realistic.

This novel touches on many REAL issues that young adults face, primarily Gemma's struggles with her weight and her self-image and bullying.

At the beginning of this novel, Gemma is overweight. Throughout the novel you really see how her weight has affected her in the past and how she still struggles with her self-image even after she has lost 50 pounds.

This novel also covers bullying. Almost all of the main characters had some experience with bullying. When they were younger: Addison was ostracized because of her spiteful personality (which I hate to say it, but I kind of understand this one), Gemma was picked on because of her weight, Max was teased because he is half Japanese, and Carter was made fun of because he spoke with an accent. The biggest bully in this novel, however, was Addison. The way Addison treated Gemma was cruel, and the worst thing about it was that Addison was supposed to be her best friend. I wanted to back hand Addison a handful of times.

I'm not a big fan of conflict that is based on miscommunication or lack of communication. Therefore, you'd think that this novel would drive me crazy, but it didn't. Jennifer Echols had me so distracted with her hilarious characters and their witty banter that she was able to pull a fast one on me. I was completely entertained by this novel, and I didn't even stop to analyze the conflict until I started my review. In other words, she completely pulled it off.

I gave The One That I Want by Jennifer Echols 5 STARS. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND this novel.

-XOXO

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Cute Read! December 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was having Echols' withdrawals since Love Story, The One That I Want was really, really cute! It wasn't on the super serious side like Forget You and Going Too Far, it felt more along the lines of Major Crush. I liked Gemma and Max a lot and I laughed a lot. Great read, but I love everything Echols writes. :)
