The onion books are always funny. Even though there is a free Onion website it is great to have the collection of The Onion stories in book form. This collection is laugh out loud funny. This is a great gift for a college student or anyone with a sarcastic sense of humor. This collection's stories all revolve around Christmas so I thought it might be limiting but it wasn't. Great book!

The Onion, of course, is an entertainment newspaper and a website featuring satirical articles reporting on international, national, and local news.

One "article" in this 2011 book reports, "Activist Judge Cancels Christmas: In a sudden and unexpected blow to the Americans working to protect the holiday, liberal U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Stephen Reinhardt ruled the private celebration of Christmas unconstitutional Monday... In addition to forbidding the celebration of Christmas in any form, Judge Reinhardt has made it illegal to say 'Merry Christmas.' ... Within an hour of the judge's verdict, National Guard troops were mobilized to enforce the controversial ruling." (Pg. 32)

Another article explains, "Coal Now Too Expensive to Put In Christmas Stockings: With winter's onset driving the demand for surface coal to record-high levels, the mineral's cost is now beyond the reach of low- and middle-income Americans who wish to punish their naughty children... For more affordable punitive options, analysts point to the relatively stagnant switch market, which could soon go the way of coal if demand increases for combustible wooden sticks." (Pg. 37)

Still another says, "Vatican Employees Unable to Relax At Holiday Party With Pope Around: ... festivities were made awkward by the unexpected appearance of Pope Benedict XVI. '[Prefect Emeritus] Bernardin [Gantin] was about to bust out his St. Bridget impression... but then the pope walked over and we quickly changed the subject to the sacred presence of the Holy Spirit during transubstantiation'... Pope Benedict's 'way too formal' attire made everyone feel even more ill at ease." (Pg.

Even though I bought this for my soon-to-be- hubby, I ended up reading a good chunk of it. We spent several hours laughing at the satirical stories - until we had tears running down our face. I enjoyed the book - and the memories it gave us. We are both longtime fans of the Onion, and having it in print made it that much better.

purchased as a gift. Recipient said they loved it. Warning: more colorful language than I expected, but I can't say I'm surprised...I mean, it IS "The Onion"...

Have always enjoyed the Onion and this is no exception. It's the type of humor that really pinpoints what you are really thinking about the current news
