I originally rated the Oontz XL two stars but revised the rating to four stars because Cambridge Soundworks customer service was so good at working with me to address quality control issues. The first unit I received had a problem where the sound would cut out at low listening levels. This turned out to be due to a firmware issue with some of the first units shipped. They overnight shipped a second unit to me and the sound cutout issue was solved. Unfortunately the second unit had distorted bass and sounded like it had a bad speaker. They quickly shipped a third unit to me and it had the cutout issue solved and had clean bass. I am very happy with this unit and it sounds great. It is too bad about the quality control issues but the great customer service made up for the quality control problems. Just make sure you get a good one.

First off, it looks great. Flat black, simple, smooth, and can easily blend in to decor. I've used it while finishing my basement (drywall dust everywhere) and it cleans up like new with a damp paper towel. Controls are simple and easy to use.
Second, the sound is incredible. This is not going to replace your surround sound and amplified sub, but I can only assume you already know that. On that note, it's clearer and louder than many soundbars I've seen/heard. The bass will not blow you away but you can feel it, you feel the notes, feel the sound, feel the music, not just hear it. Many wireless portable speakers lack in this department.
I hate to knock other products but I shopped around for months and did a lot if comparing. I've heard and would rate it better than the following.
- Bose Soundlink Mini $199
- Bose Soundlink $299
- Beats Pill by Dre $199 (awful)
- Sonos One $199
- Any wireless speaker from Lowe's $80-$100

I bought this for $119 and couldn't be happier! It looks great & sounds great ... Isn't that what we're all looking for?

I own the original ultra-portable Cambridge Soundworks Oontz (best ultra-portable speakers under $150) so this one was a must buy for me.

When I first bought it I felt somewhat let down as I had very high expectations for it. The sound didn't quite as good (probably because I'm so used to listening to bookshelf speakers)...however after several hours of breaking in the sound got a lot better. I tested the unit with my high-end Cowon Mp3 player thru AUX Port (better than bluetooth) and damn it sounded clear with nice bass.I even use it on my laptop with my high-end Dragonfly DAC (Computer Sound Card for those who don't know what a DAC is) and it sounded amazing.

I wanted to compare this portable with much more expensive portable speakers...naming Big Jambox and Bose Minilink. The Big Jambox sounds nice although its sounds somewhat boomy to me. Some people may prefer this type of sound so if you're that person you'd like the Jambox. The bose mini packs a bunch of bass (the most of the three) for its size and sounded somewhat too warm, so this doesn't really sound natural to me although it has that unique sound experience. The weakness of the Bose Mini is that, because it's an ultra-portable size speaker, the sound is not as immersive as the other two. After several hours of listening the Oontz XL has the best clarity of them all. In terms of bass the Big Jambox is probably the winner (probably due to its size since it is the biggest out of the three) although the Bose Mini offers very nice and clean bass for its size. I prefer clarity in my music so Oontz XL is the overall winner.

Incredible volume and sound for the money, it does not sound as good as the Jawbone big jambox or the Bose soundlink, but it is also a third of the price. I don't think there is a better value out there for a Bluetooth speaker. Unfortunately though if you are looking for the best sound that big money gap is a requirement.

I have been looking at bluetooth, self-powered and rechargeable speakers for several months as a more convenient alternative to my Yamaha PDX-11 wired, AA-battery powered speaker. $300 for a Bose or similar would have me too worried about protecting it, although I wanted good sound. The just-right price and many positive reviews of the Oontz XL, combined with my great experience having owned several other Cambridge Soundworks products, had me really excited to open the box and kick out the jams! Well, the Oontz XL connected easily, and certainly is capable of high volumes without distortion, however the lifeless sound coming out, especially at low to moderate volumes, truly bummed me out. To my ears, it just sounds flat - not much bass, mostly midrange and not at all rich no matter the media or equalization settings. I kept switching back and forth between my PDX-11, at various equalization settings and different songs from blues to classical to rock to rap, and just couldn't make a case for the Oontz. Sure, it would play way louder before distorting, but at "most of the time" volumes it lacks depth. I even brought my wife into the room for a blind test and every song she picked the PDX over Oontz. (Although she liked the looks of the Oontz much better than the Yamaha once I showed them to her.) I wanted this little buddy to be my new traveling companion so bad!! After 3 days of trying to like it, I decided to boot it. Fourth Cambridge product I've purchased and the first strike-out, so I'll cut them some slack and wouldn't rule out a future purchase of their products. None-the-less, I am back on the hunt for a relatively low-priced travelling speaker with a bit more freedom than my old wired Yamaha offers.

PROS:
* Easy connectivity and bluetooth control
* Simple, clean aesthetics
* Great battery life
* Capable of very high volumes without distortion

CONS:

* Lackluster tonal quality
* Little bass
