Book Description

A late night knock at a door starts a ‘Kafkaesque’ tale of confusion and frustration in this latest 4,000 word short story from British writer Colin Marks.

This story came to me when I was at the bedside of my girlfriend who had just had a hip replacement only hours earlier. She explained she hadn’t been nervous before the operation as the doctor had come 'out of the blue' and told her they were ready for her. It was hours before she was expecting the operation to take place so she hadn’t had time for the anxiety to build! I’m sure the story is influenced by Dino Buzzati Traverso’s 'Seven Floors' or Franz Kafka’s 'The Trial', both of which I’d read a decade before, and are highly recommended. If you enjoyed this story, please try my others. And for those who are interested, the new hips are doing great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Never read Kafka? October 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
All these one-star reviews blow me away. The book description was "Kafkaesque" and so what were you expecting? This is indeed a mind-bender of a story, and exactly like something Kafka would write. Or Philip K Dick. Or even Robert Heinlein. Of course it's disturbing, that's what the author intended. It does "disturbing" very well. If you don't want to be disturbed, go find some feel-good story to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written and engaging February 7, 2013

I'm also baffled by the one-star reviews. I thought this was a very nice existential piece, and the "cold" narrative style sets the mood perfectly. Very Kafkaesque indeed, and as for the conclusion, I found it quite effective as the last sentence put an ironic smirk on my face, which I'm sure was the author's intention. I will definitely check out his other works.

1.0 out of 5 stars the operation February 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
this is not a story in that it is the first few chapters of what could be a story. it was disappointing and terribly so as I had invested fifteen minutes to arrive at the inconclusion. do not waste your time on this cruel trick.

1.0 out of 5 stars huh? June 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was the oddest bit of writing I have encountered. Novelty or prelude to full length? Neither prospect is really interesting to me. SOME may find novelty in here, though the formal writing makes the whole stiff and a bit boring. Which would reduce interest.

Not that everything must make sense...but SOMETHING should. The tale was understandable - I don't mean there was confusion. Just no point. No direction. No story development.

Not recommended.
