Most Helpful Customer Reviews

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful By Jonathan B. Hall on September 28, 2009
Format: Paperback
The Organ Historical Society calls this book a "classic," and I wholeheartedly agree. Klotz wrote during the period called "die Orgelbewegung," literally "The Organ Movement." It was a time when the neo-baroque principles of organ design, first promulgated by Albert Schweitzer, were at their zenith. Now, in 2009, especially in the United States, we are in the thick of a different esthetic, one based heavily on English and French Romantic principles...and principals!

Nevertheless, Klotz' book is factually accurate, and filled with incontrovertible, rock-solid facts and information about the historic bases of pipe organ design and construction. The book contains illustrations that, while not the opulent Sir Walter Scott-style steel engravings of the Victorian Audsley, are still extremely clear and useful. (I have seen Klotz' illustrations denigrated, in print, as "crude," and I can only shake my head at such a misunderstanding. They are just fine!)

There are some, especially in America, who feel that if a fashion or taste has changed, then all books which refer to it are somehow "bad." However, the information in this book is not oriented towards esthetic value judgements, but rather historical fact. To negate the book's value because you don't "agree" with its stylistic orientation is simply silly.

I recommend this book, strongly, to any serious student of organ history, design, performance, literature, or construction. No organist's book shelf should be without it.
