About the Author

Manitonquat (Medicine Story) is an elder, storyteller, and retired ceremonial leader of the Assonet Wampanoag. A former editor of the native liberation journal Heritage and poetry editor of Akwesasne Notes, he is the author of eight subsequent books. He was a co-founder of the Tribal Healing Council, a member of the North American Indian Spiritual Unity Movement, directs the Mettanokit Prison Circle programs in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, is advisor to the Nature School. A counselor and teacher of counseling, he lectures widely on justice, peace, the environment, conscious evolution and creating a truly human society. He delivered the keynote speech at a United Nations gathering on non-violence honoring Mahatma Gandhi. Together with his wife, the Swedish actress and playwright Ellika Lindén, Manitonquat creates international family camps in many countries to give the experience of tribal living, working, playing, sharing everything and taking care of the children and elders together. Their dream is to create an international Circle Way Village where human beings may safely raise their children together in peace, freedom, equality, cooperation, and love, caring for each other and our relatives that share this beautiful Mother Earth, thus fulfilling our Original Instructions. His newsletter Talking Stick can be found on the Internet at circleway.org.

Well, one of his parents was, in fact, Wampanoag, and he is an elder.
Peace Village
Essential information and guidance for living lovingly and creatively in these turbulent times where we need to lead and embody ways of love that have been forgotten.
Ms. M. ODriscoll
I think I have all of his books, and read them at intervals, to get what I missed the last time.

Once in a great while in life, long known wisdom is thoughtfully dispensed --and you say to yourself, 'I've always known this . . ' This book is like returning to the blessing of life, and the sacredness of each step on our wonderful earth, after being lost in chaos.

This is the book I will buy for all my family, hoping it will bless their spirits as it has blessed mine. My heartfelt thanks to Medicine Story.

The Original Instructions is beautifully written. The author speaks directly to the reader and touches people of all races and religious dominations. I highly recommend this book to people who are hopeful and for people who believe in positive change.

The author's books The Circle Way, and Ending Violent Crime, are useful as well. The Golden Age of humanity was perhaps the Pleistocene, when people lived largely in the way he describes. Manitonquat told stories in my daughter's school years ago, and I took the day off, to hear what he had to say. I had heard him speak at a National Storytelling Association event, also. Manitonquat makes me feel like a kid again, in a good way, where the world is full of wonderful lessons to learn, still magical, still beautiful. Western culture worships the material, for it has forgotten the spiritual. In many indigenous cultures, the old teach the young, for the old are close to returning to the Great Mystery, as the young have only recently come from it. There are few true elders in WhiteManCulture. Elders like him put tons of meaning into a single sentence, at times so much that it takes a while to unravel it all. He told me once that we all have the same job on the planet- helping each other out. I do some charity work, helping people no-one else helps, as a direct result of this epiphany. About a month later, an epiphany hit me, that yes, that really is true, the truth of that unfolded for me, all at once. Manitonquat reminds us that the search for light and truth is never-ending, there is always more growth. The Children of the Morning Light: Wampanoag Tales as Told By Manitonquat is worth reading only for the story of Moshaup and the Dolphins.Read more ›
