Every since I saw the Tummy Tub on The Today Show back in May last year, I was very intrigued about it. I was amazed to see all these cute little babies in these clear bucket-type tubs. Being that I have recently had a baby, I wanted to try it out and see if it was really worth all the hype. At first all I knew about the Tummy Tub was that it used less water, mimicked the womb, and was easily transportable. However as I researched and used the product, I found out a lot more about its benefits.

(From the Tummy Tub USA website) "For nine months your baby feels safe, comfortable and secure in the womb. After birth everything changes for your baby, who suddenly experiences bright lights, new sights and sounds, hunger, gravity and an ever-changing world. The TummyTub® has been developed in cooperation with physicians, midwives and nursery nurses, to ease the transition from the secure environment of the womb to the new world. The unique womb shape helps your baby to relax, and become calm in the familiar fetal position. The benefits of the Tummy Tub are acknowledged in maternity hospitals and homes throughout Europe."

When I first got the Tummy Tub and read the instructions, I was a little hesitant if I was going to be able to bathe my baby correctly the first time. I found it very important to read the instructions thoroughly because once the baby is in the Tummy Tub, you have to hold and support the baby's head. It was imperative that I had everything I was going to need within arms length to reach it with my free hand.

My son happens to have acid reflux and lots of gas. Sometimes he can get very fussy and uncomfortable. The Tummy Tub seemed to instantly sooth and relax my baby when I placed him in it.

Here is our eight week old baby, loving his Tummy Tub. This is our second child. With our first, we didn't have the Tummy Tub and those early baths weren't this pleasant. He'd get cold, complain, gripe, and bath time would be over in a hurry. With the Tummy Tub, my baby is genuinely happy. Actually, he gripes when I pull him out. I use the tub for bath time, but also for when he's super crabby. Strip down and put him in the Tub, he's a happy camper. You'd be hard-pressed to find a video of such a happy little 8-weeker in a traditional bath. He usually falls fast asleep after his bath, no matter what time of day.

A word of advice: if you have a small baby (this guy was 6 lbs when he was born), wad up a small towel and place it in the bottom of the tub. It will help prop him up. I also didn't fill up to the line, when he was so small. Once he was around 10 lbs, he didn't need the towel anymore. Even now, I still don't fill it quite to the line, because it starts to get too close to his chin. I think armpit height is enough.

For anyone worried about the safety of the tub, you really need to relax. It's not like you should ever be out of arm's reach with your bathing child -- ever -- no matter what sort of tub you use. Baby is not going to spontaneously flip in the tub and instantly drown. Good parents are always right there, participating in bath time and keeping a close hand on the baby! If you're too stupid to stay close, then maybe you should rethink your choice to have a baby.

If you're worried about getting your baby "clean," here's another word of advice: little babies aren't super dirty. There is no need to scrub them silly. I read some reviews about parents having a hard time picking their baby up to scrub them.

So, glad I bought this!!! Wish I had it when my little one was first born. Just found out about it and will use it from the beginning with the next one. My toddler was 20 months when I introduced this. 1st time use was 30 mins.! Here is some things I noticed. He was born preemie and gets very cold quick even now. At swim class he is the only one who has to wear a wet suit that covers his thighs and upper arms with an additional wet suit over the top that is like a singlet. He loves the water but can't stay in the bath long before he has to get out. So, that is why the 30 mins was such a surprise. I felt the water and it was not warm after less than 10 mins. but he was fine. I didn't get his head wet but rather let him soak with the water to his arm pits. His body was in fetal position so this helps to keep warmth in. He had a perma grin the entire time so I think that there were happy endorphins being released that were also keeping him warm. I would get the stand. I did and I am happy to have saved my back especially sitting there so long for him to be done. I just got a little foot stool and sat there with him. I had him in our room which has carpet and I took a chance just putting a towel down. He loves to splash but surprising he didn't do much of that. Instead he wanted to just be content. It takes such little water as well which is great. Not hard to lift it and dump it out. Easy to Clean. I would get everything you need to be sitting there for a while. Go to the bathroom and bring a drink. I didn't realize how long it would be. He is able to sit back and hold his head but a newborn would need help with the head. Another reason to save your back and get the stool. The only thing I would do different is hide this from my husband until he was able to see it in action.Read more ›
