Book Description

A disabled veteran takes up a new profession, but it's not the one he intended; he's running errands for the dead. An amnesiac discovers in the last moment of his life that he is the key to overthrowing a worldwide tyranny. A high school student invents a perfume that produces honest elections. Two unusual people meet and have more in common than they're willing to tell. A vampire gets exactly what's coming to him-- and a mobster, planning a theft, doesn't. If you like stories that make you think, you've found them.

From the Author

This book contains two ghost stories unlike any others I have seen.
Knock yourself out.

About the Author

Matthew Joseph Harrington, son of historian Joseph Daniel Harrington, was born in 1960 at the US Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan. He taught himself to read at the age of two. He was enrolled in public schools in Bowie, Maryland, and received an education by skipping class to hang out in the public library. At 10 he pushed a two-ton truck uphill unassisted.
First story ever sold was to Larry Niven for Man-Kzin Wars series-- which, given that the authors up to then were such lights as Poul Anderson, Hal Colebatch, Dean Ing, Donald Kingsbury, and Dr. Jerry Pournelle, was an experience not unlike showing up for a draft physical and being inducted into the Justice League. His third published story, Soul Survivor, in Baen's Universe, has been recommended for the Nebula. He is coauthor, with Larry Niven, of The Goliath Stone.
He has rewired his house, which had no ground, and rebuilt its sewer drain, which had burst in the crawlspace in which he had to work. Prayers are always welcome.
He has fed a feral kitten from the palm of his hand. He has repeatedly been bitten on the palm by a kitten.
On two occasions he has been propositioned by women who turned out to be porn stars. He turned them both down.
He is currently living with fantasy artist Valerie Anne Shoemaker and 5 cats.
He does not drink beer.
Stay fannish, my friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth your time and money May 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I borrowed this from the Amazon Prime lending library, but when I return it, I think I'll buy it for keeps. This is a decent collection of decent stories, a mixture of SF and fantasy, prose and poetry and some amusing essays on Larry Niven's Kzinti done for some convention program books. As with any anthology, there were stories I liked and stories I didn't, but the former considerably outnumber the latter - possibly because I enjoy Harrington's offbeat sense of humor. If you liked his collaboration with Larry Niven (THE GOLIATH STONE) or his stories in the various MAN-KZIN WAR anthologies, you'll probably like this as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Collection May 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Harrington has written a set of gripping, funny, and sometimes tragic stories. A previous reviewer has summarized them, so I'm not going to try to do that again. I will say, for example, that "Soul Survivor" is a ghost story with a few twists new to me. The mood of one story is not always the mood of the next one, but, as was said of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, "Here is God's plenty." Get your own copy, and start reading.

I enjoyed the variety of stories. They vary from funny to tragic, but most are fun; there's a touch of politics and history with Harrington's usual literary and historical references. And, of course, fascinating characters and settings:

The collection starts with secrets (sic). To describe it would spoil it, but I think secrets will move you.

A Way of Life focuses on a bank robbery and a woman who is so immersed in the book she's reading that she doesn't pay much attention to what's happening around her until the bank robber takes her hostage. I loved the story on at least two levels.

Catapault is a poem with a fun twist.

The Miller's Other Daughter. I loved this version of the fairy tale.

Falling Rocks is a prequel. Find out to what...

The Origin of Democracy. Clever, but not my favorite.

Grindstone is an intriguing fantasy that'll have you wondering and worrying until the end.

Brothers. Scary. I didn't see that coming.

Black Boxes. What are those black boxes up to?

This World Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us. Well, it is a small world. Another poem, and the melody will stay with you.

Just Dessert. A scary mystery.

Known Space ConBook Material. This includes some Kzinti stories from the Man-Kzin Wars series. I confess that I especially loved this one 'cause I love the series. And there's a Ringworld psalm. [The Man-Kzin Wars series and Ringworld were created by Larry Niven.]

Elephant Hunt. Well, there's Big Hunter, Little Hunter, and a monkey...

The Mark. This is another very good story with a puzzle at the end; and I must quote one of Harrington's great lines: "the searing brilliance of night." (It's Vegas.

They must be on the payroll, or at the very least, friends of the author (2 of the reviewers don't even show as having purchased this e-book, thereby making their reviews appear a bit suspect). A friend of mine on Facebook who knows the writer asked everyone to purchase this e-book, so I headed over to Amazon, and I liked the cover art so I thought, why not? But as the saying goes, and is proven here, you can't judge a book by its cover. Based on the two reviews already given to this collection prior to my purchase, I was expecting something amazing, especially when the book's title included the words "Original Uncut", but sad to say, maybe a heavily edited/cut version would have been an improvement.

What is lacking in Mr. Harrington's book? For starters, character development and any semblance of a plot in any of the short stories included in this collection. His previous books where he is listed as a co-author must have included very little of his input because the amateurishly written stories here are almost painful to read. It's as though the author had these great stories with beautifully descriptive details in his head, then assumed you could see into his mind, so he neglected to put those details into the actual story. None of the stories are even original in concept. As an example [spoiler alert!] Secrets is just a poor-man's topsy-turvy Ladyhawke. I could go on but I won't; you get my drift.

Not to be cruel, just honest, to the author I say, it's fine if you want to self-publish, just don't expect the reader to be impressed. To other readers out there, I recommend that you don't waste your money on this poorly executed e-book.
