For Environmentally Friendly Yoga Mats
"The visible fibers on the top side provided a 'slightly rough texture' and 'grippy' surface. The mat was thin enough to fold and had a solid, not too squishy surface for standing without wobbles, but still was padded enough for lying-down work."

This is a great mat that offers incredible traction, durability, and support. It is thick enough but not too thick. I feel balanced on it and love the jute fiber and don't really find it "too rough" but that is just me.
It does have that natural rubber smell, especially brand new, but it gets better over time and it doesn't bother me that much. Also, with the Natural colored mat, it gets dirty really easily and although I never THOUGHT my hands and/or feet were exceptionally dirty while practicing on this mat, I ended up with some awful stains where my hands and feet are in downdog.
The major complaint I have about this mat is that it sheds like crazy. I always have to pick little pieces of rubber off of my clothing after seated/lying down positions. I don't know if it's because of the jute fiber interwoven with the natural rubber or what, but it's kind of annoying to have little rubber particles clinging to me all the time when I am practicing/teaching !
I finally got one, and its truly amazing. Its got a nice texture, not too soft and not too rough. And it has a very good grip.
I placed it on the floor and found some poses difficult (i need a little more cushion as I am a newbie). I usually use 2 yoga mats in classes, so I placed this one on a thin carpet and it was perfect.
Its rolls and unrolls easily and occupies very little space. its light enough to be carried out.
Also, i got the green color and it looks amazing!
If you're looking for a mat for restorative, gentle, meditative yoga, this mat is fine, and if natural materials are important to you, then go for it. A lot of the real strengths of this mat will come into play in more vigorous yoga practices.
The jute, which is only a little scratchy, helps create traction for sweaty hands and feet, so no slipping around on your mat even during the fastest flows. This is a great mat for beginners because even with sweaty palms, you won't be slipping and sliding out of downward dog. It also helps build those all-important (for some) yoga callouses. They're not cute, but they really protect my elbows when I'm holding scorpion or pincha mayurasana.
This mat has a textured bottom that actually grips the floor. If I'm holding a single leg balance pose, and have to hop a step to catch my balance, my old orange Gaiam mat would bunch up around my foot, making it impossible, my outrageously overpriced Jade mat would go slipping across the floor, taking me with it (Jade mats are, as far as I'm concerned, unsafe at any speed), but my little red Eco Yoga Mat stays put. No bunching, no skidding. For inversions, arm balances, and standing balances, this mat stays precisely where I put it.Read more ›

There is definitely a stink to it, which is disappointing, but it's already fading. I like the earthy jute and how grippy it is. Read morePublished on February 28, 2013 by Kate
although this mat is eco-friendly in its materials, when you consider how often it will have to be replaced the eco-friendliness loses some of its shine. Read morePublished on August 20, 2010 by M. Stern
