Editorial Reviews

Folks headed from Santa Fe to St. Louis by wagon train trust the riders escorting them, tough hombres who proved their mettle by fighting off an Indian attack. Yet the riders are wolves in sheep's clothing. They're Confederate soldiers who aim to lead the wagon train and its cargo of Union gold into a Rebel ambush.

The Outriders is about that journey...and of one man's journey from villain to hero. Joel McCrea plays the Johnny Reb whose change of heart is inspired in part by a lovely wagon train passenger (Arlene Dahl). Rugged men. Wide-open spaces. Sudden dangers. The hallmarks of the cinematic West are here. And topping them all is a daring river crossing that's "one of the best of its kind ever done on film" (Variety).

5.0 out of 5 stars One of McCrea's best May 4, 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I consider this one of Joel McCrea's best. It is a straight, true western of the '50's in the grand epic tradition. Three Rebs escape from prison, join a group of Southern raiders and take on the job of stealing gold from a secret Northern wagon train heading east. There is plenty going on in this western which gives it that epic feel. Arlene Dahl is radiant, especially during the dance-around-the-campfire scene. How she puts Joel in his place is something. Barry Sullivan has never been more robust. His actions during the river crossing are fun to watch. The river crossing itself doesn't have any tragedy but is one of the more compelling I've seen in westerns. Sullivan shows us how to do it by drawing in the dirt, and they do it - for real. I love stuff like that.

There's plenty of action, human drama, and travelling through western lands. It's all good.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) presents "THE OUTRIDERS" (1950) (93 min/Color) -- Starring Joel McCrea, Arlene Dahl, Barry Sullivan, Claude Jarman Jr., James Whitmore & Ramon Novarro

Directed by Roy Rowland

Will Owens (Joel McCrea) is one of three Confederate soldiers who escape from a northern prison compound. The three men join a wagon train, hoping to capture a Yankee gold shipment to help their cause. When the wagoners are attacked by Indians, Owens decides to reassess his priorities and protect the passengers, including the fetching Jen Gort (Arlene Dahl).

Watch as this film is stolen by silent screen legend Ramon Novarro in one of his more substantial later roles. He essays his character perfectly, giving it much more depth than was in the screenplay. He also lends the part style, grace, dignity and humor

This is most definitely a western as a model of the highest qualities that were present in the 50's and were lost after the 60's it would be "The Outriders". It is not one of the greatest, but as far as entertainment is concerned, it sure delivers.

Special footnote: -- The film never had a more honorable or stalwart hero than Joel McCrea. And if you've seen any of his films, fans will know that whatever he does it will be the honorable thing. It's a tribute to McCrea that if he insisted on always being the stalwart hero, he had the talent and personality to carry it off. This is who he was and it will always remain with us - his fans!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good movie July 10, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
The Outriders was a pretty good movie. My biggest complaint is that whenever Warner Bros. does these "remaster" movies they NEVER add subtitles. I don't have cable or satellite and my newer TV won't allow me to watch closed captioned without it, so I have no idea if there is closed captioned or not (I doubt it). It has a really good cast and you can't go wrong with Joel McCrea. The movie was filmed in and around Kanab, Utah so the scenery is great. (Kanab celebrates their western filming heritage - Western Legends Roundup - every August. Joel McCrea filmed at least a half dozen movies there.)
