If you're the cash crop in a cube farm, Dilbert tells the story of your life. If you're [still] a grad student, Jorge Lam has been looking over your shoulder, and proved it with his Piled Higher and Deeper comic. (Maybe you have to be in physical sciences to appreciate it. Sorry to all you others.)

It's just so true. The actors [sic] were mostly grad students in physical sciences, so any awkwardness comes across as homey and genuine. And, somehow, the actors really matched that comic! Prof. Smith (no one I ever met, of course), Tajel, Slackenerny, Cecilia - reality follows art, I'm convinced.

It's brilliant, and not just because all the actors live what they portray. (Free food - the grad student instinct lives well on into the time of life whe the six figures of income don't include the decimal point.)

Fun. Just fun, for some people - and I'm one.

I am a big fan of the comics, so I was really looking forward to finally watching the movie. But the movie just didn't do it for me. I have to admit, I found it boring. Most jokes were a 1:1 copy from the comics, and while they work in a comic format, in my opinion, they come across as unsurprising, really slow and just not well-timed in the film. And once you get bored you start noticing the little things like the constant change in the main character's hair length in the supposed same scene (ok ok, it's not a professional production, but everyone else's hair do stayed more or less the same, so why not the main character's?). I almost feel guilty for not liking this movie because I love the comics, but I just found it mildly boring.

I anxiously waited for months for this movie to be released on DVD after viewing it at school. This movie brings the best comic strip ever to your screen. I love that the actors are actual graduate students. How exaggerated is it from actual grad school? Not as much as one would think, which is what makes it hilarious. So go ahead, procrastinate for an hour. You honest weren't going to finish reading all those papers today anyway, were you?

The movie arrived on time (maybe even earlier), was new, and exactly as described. The movie was fantastic, and definitely relateable, much like PhD Comics are. I would recommend this to anyone going through the PhD experience, or even those who have gone through it. It's funny, true to form, and honest about the way of life of a PhD researcher!

The (non) life and times of grad students the world over. Watch this if you are even thinking about grad school.

I Piled it Higher and Deeper* back in the 20th century; many details have of course changed (comics were on newsprint paper not websites back then), but grad school is still grad school. The PHD Comics strip is to grad school what Dilbert is to corporate life (I moved from academia to corporate R&D in the 1990s, so I know whereof I speak). If you like the comics, you will probably enjoy the movie. Most of the cast members AND those behind the cameras are students, faculty, or staff so they know academia, and that shows.

None of my professors resembled Professor Smith, which is a good thing -- grad school is hard enough even when your professor actually does care about you.

*Very old academic joke: you know what BS is, right? Well, MS means "More of the Same" and PHD means "Piled Higher and Deeper."

This movie is amazingly close to the actual life of a PhD student. I recommend it to all PhD students past and present and to all who are contemplating a career as one.

It isn't for everyone. It's way funnier if you went to graduate school. And even funnier if you were a TA or LA while there. If you are now a college professor parts are fall off the sofa funny! I just don't think a lot of people will get the jokes so you might want to rent it first (or view the cartoon online).

I love the comics, but the movie was kinda awful. It is really short, and I didn't laugh once.
Not worth the $20 either, just stream it - you'll never watch it again.
