Editorial Reviews

Between The Buried And Me will release its forthcoming album, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues, on April 12 through Metal Blade.
The effort, the first of two conceptual albums, is a three-song, 30-minute offering recorded with producer David Bottrill (Tool, Muse).
"The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues will introduce two human characters who live in different planes of existence, separated by millions of light years," comments guitarist Paul Waggoner. "We find that each is confronted with similar personal issues that they need to reckon with. Both characters make decisions that will change their lives, and perhaps the course of the universe, forever. Musically, it sounds like BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME. The record has elements of aggression, beauty, quirkiness, and pure cacophony. For 'Part 1', we establish several themes which I'm sure will be revisited in the lengthier 'Part 2', which is something we really look forward to. We love to expand on simple ideas and see where they take us."

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent, epic E.P. November 7, 2012
Format:Audio CD
"The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" is the first-ever E.P. released by North Carolinian quintet Between The Buried And Me. But to call it an "E.P." seems almost a little bit misleading. Yes, there are only three songs presented here, but overall, their running time totals more than thirty-minutes! Therefore, at the very least, it is an unusually short-full length; at most, though, it is one of the longest and most epic E.P.'s in the business. It is also one of the most expansive, dynamic, creative, and musically-challenging short-players that this reviewer has ever had the fortune of hearing. With influences ranging from King Crimson, Tool, and Dream Theater to Mr. Bungle to Brutal Truth, Fantomas, and Converge, BTBAM fly back and forth from prog rock to math-y hard/metalcore to thrash metal to deathgrind, and in the process, cover every bit of ground in between. As a result, to call any one of these three songs "unpredictable" would be a vast, vast understatement. They each fly through at least a dozen different places -- but the real genius to them is that they do so without ever sounding random, unfocused, and/or haphazard.

So, since it has now been established how great "The Parallax"'s songwriting is, now let's talk about the band's musicianship. Described in only one word, it is: Phenomenal. Guitarists Paul Waggoner and Dustie Waring throw out their usual abundance of excellent solos, technically-proficient leads, and inventive riffs that range from melodic to bludgeoning. Drummer Blake Richardson's drumming is tight, precise, and very math-y; and four/five-stringer Dan Briggs completes the rhythm section by laying down some really interesting and technical bass lines.

5.0 out of 5 stars BTBAM Delivers The Goods In A Bite Size Package November 25, 2011
By Pete
Format:Audio CD
Between the Buried and Me is a band who is no stranger to adding new elements to their sound, and this EP being evidence of that claim.

The album contains everything you'd expect from a BTBAM release - Paul Waggoner and Dustie Waring's amazing guitar riffs and solos, Blake Richardson's excellent jazz-influenced drumming, Dan Briggs' smooth basslnes, and Tommy Rogers' amazing vocal range and keyboard atmospheres - and much, much more.

As the EP is a prequel to a forthcoming concept album, Waggoner explained in an interview, "The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues will introduce two human characters who live in different planes of existence, separated by millions of light years. We find that each is confronted with similar personal issues that they need to reckon with. Both characters make decisions that will change their lives, and perhaps the course of the universe, forever."

The first track, entitled "Specular Reflection," begins with a dark piano and orchestral intro. After about 50 seconds, it blasts into harsh vocals and intense guitars and drumming. This combination of intense vocals and instruments continues until about 3 minutes in, where the chorus shines with Rogers clean singing alternating with his harsh vocals. This is followed by a technical section showing the band's influence of extreme metal and progressive rock, riddled with melody and intensity.

The second track, called "Augment of Rebirth," begins with a frenzy of technical guitar riffs and frenetic drumming, followed by Rogers' harsh vocals. This pattern continues for the next several minutes, with snippets of Rogers alternating his clean voice. After more technical riffs, it alternates in a ragtime section juxtaposed with the intense moments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their most focused effort yet. April 12, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
New Between the Buried and Me is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get. However, in BTBAM's case, that is never a bad thing. As every fan should know by now, BTBAM is one of the best progressive metal bands out there today.

This album is also a conceptual piece,"The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues serves as the first installment of a two-part story. Hypersleep introduces two human characters who live in different planes of existence, separated by millions of light years. We find that each of them is confronted with similar personal issues that they need to reckon with. Both characters make decisions that will change their lives, and perhaps the course of the universe, forever. The follow up album will pick up the story with our two main characters, with the help of near light speed travel, meeting each other and realizing together their purpose in the universe." Yeah, pretty trippy. But the band pulls it off with flying colors. Now for the actual music (finally!)

The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues continues on the BTBAM path to more progressive territory. This is BTBAM's first EP, but in name only. 3 songs, 30 minutes.

First and foremost, we have "Specular Reflection." The longest song on the album, it is also the most interesting. Beginning with a very Symphony X like intro, it blast into typical BTBAM about a minute in. There are two things that you'll notice with this song. One, Tommy Rogers voice is better than it ever was, especially his clean vocals. Two, this song will draw a lot of comparisons with "Swim to the Moon", which is a fair comparison. However, this song maintains much more focus than that one. "Swim to the Moon", while a great song, was victim to Dream Theater like noodling, which tends to get tedious and boring.
