I feverishly sought this song after hearing it played in "Waking Ned Devine", I became slightly obsessed with it. Maybe more than slightly.
It's easily my favorite Irish song. It has a haunting, deep tone which rings through and conjures imagery of echoing choirs in ancient monasteries. The combination of voice pitches and qualities is simply exquisite. The instrumental crescendo builds, unassuming, until it comes over you with a deep bass drum roll and a simple strumming into the chorus' cymbal clash. The pipes come in and send you flying across cliff-cleaved landscapes. There's a sense of purpose in this song, of solidarity across generations, and fond reminiscence. For a delightfully different, yet equally as enchanting version, see that of Sinead O'Connor. |
