Book Description

In 2002, at the age of 39, I was a successful journalist and critic when I was diagnosed with testicular cancer, a disease that usually strikes men in their teens and 20s. At first I tried to deny my condition (trying to treat a tumor with hot baths and ice packs). Eventually, I decided I would learn as much about my illness as possible while trying to keep my emotions on hold.

What followed was an experience that finally forced me to deal with issues about my body that I had tried to ignore for decades. Along the way I dealt with a physician who gave me ridiculous advice and acquaintances who asked unbelievable questions. But I was also fortunate to be surrounded by people who supported me and doctors who helped me through the process.

"I kept reminding myself that this did not happen to me because I ate the wrong foods, or didn't get enough vitamins, or had sex with the wrong people (and yes, there were people -- not necessarily friends -- who flat-out asked me if it was sexually transmitted). I did not have this tumor because I got too much sun, or didn't get enough exercise, or was careless about my personal hygiene. There was no explanation. It simply happened..."

Throughout the sometimes painful, often strange and occasionally bizarrely funny recovery period, I began to realize what had happened to me was not a tragedy but an opportunity to take a second look at where I was and where I wanted to be. Cancer, I learned, is not always a death sentence; in my case, it gave me the chance to live a better life.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

James Sanford spent two months in denial as a lump in one of his testicles caused him great mental unease, though no pain per se. When he was finally diagnosed, he was told that one of his testicles had to be removed. In this Kindle Single, he offers a detailed narration of his life and thoughts as cancer encroached, walking readers through the big moments: when he first noticed something was not right, doctor visits, the operation, radiation treatment, and beyond to the healthy, active life he currently leads. Sanford's writing is smooth as works to shine light on a misunderstood cancer.  He's also remarkably honest, often telling readers of highly personal and embarrassing moments. This personal essay offers a window into one man's life as it's briefly interrupted by cancer. While many still view it as a death sentence, Sanford considered his a springboard for a more fulfilling life. --Paul Diamond

Throughout this book, James found beautiful words to describe a difficult and very personal experience with cancer. Every page of the book builds a vivid yet not graphic picture of what he went through, all the while focussing on the events and his responses to them. This is not a story of illness that seeks to mine sympathy from the reader. Rather, the story explains the origin of a negative body image, how his cancer contributed to it, and the steps James went through to live beyond the obstacles. You will not find bitterness or tiresome "why me" monologues, but rather, a steady flow of concise prose that lead to an uplifting finish. Oh, and it's quite funny. Since most men that deal with testicular cancer do so early in life, there are few well written accounts of it. James has provided us with a thoughtful and detailed exploration of what it meant to his life. It's a wonderful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A candid and frequently hilarious memoir July 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Full disclosure: I know James, though it's been quite a few years since I've seen him. But I've followed his writing online -- he's an award-winning, prolific film reviewer and feature reporter for a couple of Michigan newspapers -- and have long felt that he's such a huge talent that his work was worthy of exposure on a national level, not just in the Great Lakes State. It appears that time has finally arrived, and it couldn't have happened to a more gifted and deserving person.

To write an effective memoir, you need to be willing to put everything on the table, and that's exactly what he's done in "The Sum of My Parts." It's a no-holds-barred story of his bout with testicular cancer, a disease that was rarely mentioned in public until Lance Armstrong was diagnosed with it. James' book is a valuable addition to the small body of first-person cancer stories written by men, and a must-read for anyone who has been diagnosed (or has a son, brother, husband or friend with the disease). The bottom line is that it's very treatable, but any diagnosis of cancer is frightening, and James' recollections will help you know what to expect along the way.

And even if you haven't been touched by this disease, you should still read "The Sum of My Parts," because it's so well-written, with plenty of laughs leading up to the triumphant (and unexpected) ending -- much more than a collection of anecdotes, it should be studied by aspiring memoirists as an example of how to take your experiences and craft a great story arc. It's a quick, breezy read, and will no doubt leave readers hoping that James may have a full-fledged memoir in the works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and Inspiring July 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
James is a funny and sincere writer who takes you through his battle with testicular cancer with humor and grace. Some "cancer books" read like a self-help book -- you can do this, you can get through this -- but James's familiar tone and wickedly funny prose sound more like an old friend telling you his story. His honesty, genuine introspection, and quick wit about the seriousness of dealing with the illness and life after cancer make this a memorable and compelling book for anyone dealing with a life-changing diagnosis.

And the e-book is a steal at $1.99... You could buy 20 Vanilla Wafers and cups of Sprite!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story with a happy ending. August 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I wasn't sure if I really wanted to read about someone's journey with testicular cancer. I'm glad that I gave this Kindle single a chance.

The author is able to find humor when telling this his very personal story of life before, during, and after his testicular cancer diagnosis.

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming, Funny, Short, but Gracious! August 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read this ebook in a couple of hours. But I can admit that The Sum Of My Parts is a good title for those who are full of fears of suffering from cancer, like me. I always think how would I react on the fact that I have the condition; after reading this, I can assure you that now I'll think it twice before getting myself in a melodrama. Great job from Mr. Sanford!

Enjoy your reading!

Really enjoyed reading this story of James' battle with testicular cancer. Being one of the "unmentionable" cancers it gets less attention than most, so it's hard to find many stories of those who've gone through it. James' story sheds some real light on the experience, but also goes beyond to talk about his personal life and how he has emerged from treatment not only as a survivor, but thriving. It's a terrific story and should be required reading for any dude facing the disease.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strangely feelgood... August 13, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I found this read chilling, funny and uplifting. A raw, naked journey thru a horrific and humiliating situation. Mr. Sanford takes a very honest and courageous approach to the telling of this tale. His vulnerability is admirable. What could have been a dour and ugly read is, in fact, a witty expedition thru a struggle to find one's true value and worth. I found this satisfying on a few different levels. Without giving anything away, by the time i reached the last page, i was nearly on my feet, pumping my fist in the air, celebrating the triumph of the human spirit. Well done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some Strong "Parts", A Little Less "Sum" August 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
"The Sum of My Parts" is James Sanford's somewhat funny and always honest story about confronting a diagnosis of cancer, in his case testicular cancer. The first part of the book was easily the most engaging. Sanford wakes up one morning to swelling and discomfort in his lower left groin. Given his good health and age, Sanford doesn't even consider the worst possibilities. In fact, he doesn't even have a doctor so first resorts to his own medical treatments (baby powder, ice, etc) before finally visiting one of the strip mall emergency clinics. The doctor's diagnosis is a rash and a prescription of antibiotics. The reader certainly knows the eventual diagnosis, but Sanford does a great job of adding the suspense and surprise he had as the symptoms didn't dissipate and he finally saw a doctor that ultimately shared the bad news. The remainder of his story is certainly solid and worthy of reading --- how he shares his news with his family, friends and co-workers and his eventual recovery, both physical and mental -- but just didn't keep me as engaged emotionally as the pre-diagnosis parts. This is not to diminish his overall story and as a Kindle single, this is a very short read that is worthy of the hour or so of time.
