"Mark Schalekamp proves: Holland's Got Talent" Financieele Dagblad

Product Description

Hugo Stadman is a thirty-something private banker in Amsterdam. Membership of the prestigious Batavia Club holds the key to getting ahead in the world, he thinks. But Hugo has much to hide, including his family background and his own far from impeccable behaviour.

The Parvenu is a novel about the longing to be someone you're not, about human fallibility, love and addiction. Fast-paced and funny, the trials and tribulations of Hugo Stadman are poignant and intriguing.

Mark Schalekamp's (The Netherlands, 1968) debut in 1997 was the publication of the poem Voetbal & Meisjes in the magazine Hard Gras, followed in 2000 by a collection of short stories published by Uitgeverij Thomas Rap as De Rebellenclub. He subsequently founded the company Robin Good, a pioneer in the area of socially responsible entrepreneurship. The Parvenu is his first novel.

In the Netherlands The Parvenu is a great success, it reached best-sellerstatus in half a year, film rights were sold to Eyeworks, the Netherlands' leading film producers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amsterdam Psycho!, June 23, 2011
This review is from: The Parvenu (Kindle Edition)
The Parvenu, what a great book! A post-credit crunch novel, set in Amsterdam. Banker Hugo Stadman is a social climber, but fails and falls, unable to resist Amsterdam temptations like coke, hookers and gambling. Written at high speed, The Parvenu is funny and poignant, it is American Psycho meets About a boy, with a touch of Madoff. Once started, I couldn't stop reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars real pageturner, September 8, 2011

This review is from: The Parvenu (Kindle Edition)
Have read the version in Dutch a few months ago and am curious to read the English translation. Is a real pageturner. The story line is great and Hugo Stadman is an very interesting character. If the English translation has only half of the inventive use of language as the Dutch version it is a great read.
