I was very impressed with how the author put this book together. It was detailed, well documented, organized, and covered several different aspects of the IRGC. It's fairly short and its easy to read it in a single sitting. The author used a few anecdotes very effectively to support general trends in activity. However, he did not use them to a fault and had more balanced evidence as well.

I found the book to be a good general overview of the IRGC, with the caveat that it spent too much time focusing on the organization's penetration of the Iranian economy. While important, this focus left the military aspects rather under represented for a book designed as a summary. The chapter on the defense industry gave good information about the IRGC's involvement with the major companies but did too little to describe how these companies - and the IRGC's involvement therein - have helped develop Iran's nuclear and conventional military capabilities.

All told, an interesting, well written, and easy to read account of the IRGC's history and current role. The sources cited give very useful additional information. I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the Iranian military or Iranian politics.

A must read for those that want to "know who the enemy" is. Easy to read but very detailed. Highly recommended.

The Pasdaran is a threat to peace, not just in the Middle East but around the world. Ottolenghi's book examines the origins of the praetorian guard of the Ayatollahs from just before the Iran-Iraq War to the present day. The IRGC has its tentacles in many places: in business, in terrorist proxies, in domestic thuggery, in Iranian politics and finally as a military force to be reckoned with and this book examines this without getting the reader bogged down in a laundry list of the wrongs committed by this organization. It is up-to-date, with known information about personalities, IRGC-owned ships and front companies. A great introduction to this topic.
