Editorial Reviews

Review

'This is a vintage yield of Ueda's work - a small book, deceptively simple, but an outstanding contribution to the appreciation of Japanese poetry and the narrow store of Western scholarship on Japan. It is not only the first English biography of Buson, in many ways the most rewarding of the haiku poets, but the finest introduction to his poetic art.' Howard Hibbett, Harvard University

beautiful translations and, as usual for Ueda, the most insightful commentary.

Format: Hardcover
Ueda's book is an important contribution to Buson scholarship and to the widening awareness and enjoyment of this great haiku poet and painter. In fact Buson started out as a painter and later became known for his haiku (actually hokku) and renga.

What is a shame is that the book was printed in such low volume that now it is practically impossible to find even a used copy. The book contains a thorough discussion of Buson's development as an artist and especially as a poet.

Contained in this book are some 200 of Buson's haiku in parallel Romaji-English translation. An added bonus is an Appendix containing two annotated 36-verse kasen by Buson et al, rarely if ever seen in print. It is not fully appreciated that Buson carried on Basho's tradition of linked poetry (renku). There are hundreds of Buson et al renku in Japanese just waiting to be translated and introduced to the Western public (the same can be said for Basho, and, incidentally, Issa as well).

It is not well known that Buson's haiku outnumber Basho's by about three to one, close to 3,000 haiku in all. As mentioned, Buson was also a highly gifted painter. Samples of his work (in black and white reproduction) are contained in this book.

I hope Stanford University Press will see fit to reprint this wonderful volume.

In a world of high tech achievements, Buson's haiku is beyond refreshing because it is more efficient. Call it quick seeing deep..It opens the mind with a deep dimensional structure of space and time.. True poetry..simple and free connecting all points
