Julian Philip Matthew Johnson (1873-1939) was an American surgeon and author, who was associated with the Radha Soami Satsang Beas movement and Surat Shabd Yoga, and wrote other books such as With a Great Master in India.

He wrote in the Introduction to this 1939 book, "this is not another phase of Hindu philosophy. Neither is it Vedantism. It is none of the schools and cults of India. This is not a cult, not is it even a religion... What is it? It is a scientific method of entering and realizing the kingdom of heaven while still living here in the human body. That is the sum and substance of this book... In this book, for the first time in history, the complete story of the Masters' scientific path is given to the world in the English language... The Master now wishes to meet the demands of that ever-growing number of students who will not be satisfied with formal or ceremonial religion... the Master wishes to offer a spiritual system of self-realization and of God-realization which meets every demand of science. For the first time a definite method or science is given to the English-speaking world, which shows the aspiring and yearning soul just how to enter and possess that kingdom of heaven spoken of by all prophets and all religions... here is the Royal Road to happiness " (Pg. 7-9) He adds, "the Masters... tell only what they KNOW... If we give to the world in this book some of the findings of the Masters, we are not giving out opinions nor dogmas nor theories. And this is why we must make certain statements which ... may appear dogmatic." (Pg. 10) He says, "I must call attention here to the one central thing that... distinguishes this system from others...

This is one book that caused quite a spiritual-stir in 1939 when it was first published in France. Johnson had his racial views (those of the 'civilized world' of the day and quite prejudiced) and in later years these comments were edited out by the Bea group. I purchased this dilapidated cover 1st edition because I wanted to SEE EXACTLY what was removed--besides the racial slurs, i wanted to see if spiritual things were 'revised' to better reflect the yogic particular group he followed. I also wanted to compare the 'plaigerism' of Paul Twirtchell in the 1960's--as he (published by Eckankar, the religion he started) has been accused of plaigerizing this book verbatim for paragraph after paragraph--and I wanted to SEE the original edition, which David Lane, his main detractor who researched this, stated he used as source material.

The book itself is an excellent treatise on the yoga of the Sound and Light--which Twitchell lifted for his soul travel Religion of the Light and Sound--Eckankar. Or, the sufi word: Ek ONG Kar.
THIS BOOK IS A CLASSIC AND WORTH READING if you can get around the racial slurs and see the light in it! Those are gone in later editions... It makes you smile at how the world has changed--racially at least!
Will let you know how it goes!

I ordered this book because it was advertised as the 1939 edition. It arrived and was the 1977 edition and the book was in bad shape. There were a few pages printed crooked. Almost looks like the book was put together. Not happy.

Am still looking for the original 1939 if anyone can lead me in the right direction.. THANK YOU !

This book will feel like answers to questions you haven't asked, and like knowledge you have always held being confirmed. I have bought ten of these to date, lending is better done as a gift.
