The music in this eclectic program reflects the deep influence of gypsy music on both classical and jazz music in the 20th century. Even when wearing classical clothes, the music of the gypsies cannot disguise its honesty, directness and driving rhythmic pulse. This new set features music by classical greats Bartók and Kodály alongside selections from the world of jazz, including John Lewis s Django and tracks by the band Weather Report. All of this music has strong connections for Ukrainian violinist Viktoria Mullova. Only two generations ago, her family lived off the land in a small village and the simplicity and ethnic flavor of peasant life is very much part of her. The music on these CDs allows us to glimpse another side of this fascinating artist.
