Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Pen and the Bell: Mindful Writing in a Busy World is a needed reminder that to be fully alive and alert is a prerequisite to writing well. Brenda Miller and Holly J. Hughes are the perfect guides for helping us all slow down and see the world around us. What a wise, warm, wonderful book!"
~ Dinty W. Moore, author of The Mindful Writer

"This isn't a book--it's a beautiful, quiet path into the deep woods of contemplative practice through the medium of the written word. Yes, reading its chapters will delight you. Yes, listening to these two wise women talk quietly about their lives and their writing process is a sweet and effortless reading experience that will make you feel as if you are sitting across from them, a cup of tea in front of you, hearing the measure and lilt of their kindly, honest, voices. But the real crux of this book/path isn't their words--it's yours." -Norman Fischer, author Taking Our Places

The Pen and the Bell: Mindful Writing in a Busy World is a wonderful reminder to writers that we need to create the time to write rather than wait for it. Brenda Miller and Holly Hughes encourage writers to incorporate mindfulness into our writing practice in order to deepen and strengthen what we do. A wonderful, soothing book for the stressed-out, time-strapped writer...I love the variety of prompts, which encourage writers to slow down and approach writing from a place of peace and stillness.

Combining writing and meditation in one book with helpful exercises. What a great concept. It's a book to read slowly, savoring Brenda Miller's and Holly Hughes' delightful prose--and doing the reading, writing, and meditation exercises. I opened it, started reading, and immediately ordered another copy for a writer friend.

The authors of this book, Brenda Miller and Holly J. Hughes, , respond to how distractions in our everyday lives can pull us away from our selves and the world around us and write on how we can come back to who we are, and discover who we are, through mindful writing. ; writing as contemplation, a spiritual practice, a way of becoming intimate with ourselves and the world, around us. Whether we write or want to write our self reflections, stories or poems, this book values and honors our intuition and the realization that it is from that space within us that our true creativity is born. Beautiful, inspirational quotes from others ,and excerpts from poems and prose, add to the richness of this book. "The Pen and the Bell" lists "Writing Practices" and "Contemplation Practices ," to awaken self discovery and to open our eyes to nature, others, and seemingly ordinary things such as a doctor's office, and so much more. In reading these pages, I was not only reminded of the wondrous details of our lives and this world but I experienced calm and wonder , for this book is a an invitation not a list of instructions. As they write, "this book is about how to create space for writing in a world crowded with so many distractions." And that it does and so much more.

There's nothing here about how to write a novel, short story, or even an essay, but the book says much about what to put into sentences and paragraphs. It offers food for the process, nourishment of the writing life, and companionship on the journey. Two writers and friends with poetic and lyrical sensibility with keen awareness of the natural world talk about writing in shared letters back and forth with notes on the writing process and writing prompts. A meditation guide for writers.
