Comment: This book has already been well loved by someone else and that love shows. It MIGHT have highlighting, underlining, be missing a dust jacket, or SLIGHT water damage, but over-all itâ?TMs still a good book at a great price! (if it is supposed to contain a CD or access code, that may be missing)

This encyclopedia contains detailed and well-written entries related to the horror and weird fiction genre: authors, poets, films and filmmakers, novels, magazines, comics, TV shows, plus lots of illustrations. The author biographies cover many obscure and forgotten figures from the 1700s and 1800s. There are also many essays on subjects like "Golden Age of the Ghost Story" and "Southern Gothic." If you're a horror fiction fan, you need to find this.

This is an excellent, though not perfect, reference for any and all interested in horror literature, films and illustration. I insert the criticism because, when I read this book from cover to cover, I noticed three or four slight errors. I would contact the editors, but my edition was published some time ago, and I don't know whether there have been subsequent editions. I know for a fact that one of the editors, Jacques Barzun, has passed away. Speaking of same, I have a bit of a grudge against him because he went out of his way, in the Introduction, to criticize H.P. Lovecraft, an author whom I admire greatly. Mr. Barzun was completely dismissive of Mr. Lovecraft's writing. Having said that, I still recommend this work. The articles are very well written, and the illustrations are of the highest quality. I have been a connoisseur of horror most of my life, yet I discovered artists new to me, and much regarding those with whom I was already familiar. If you are like me, you will prize this book as one to be read and referred to often. Enjoy!

Of the many surveys and encyclopedias of this subject, this is the most interesting and most authoritative. Jack Sullivan is well-known in this area--his book of music in Hitchcock's films is masterful, as well.

This encyclopedia contains many examples of supernatural and horror as it is found in old films, television and other forms of media. I thought that this book would be more contemporary and venture more outside of the theatre.
