Review

‘”Fearless’ is a word that not too many people can appreciate until they are faced with a situation that calls for an actual fearless act. And Daniel Sheehan, with the resources of government history’s most fearless lawyers.

He was fearless from the beginning, when he first learned what the word “political” really meant. At age seventeen, he clashed with Senator Jacob Javitz over an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. Instead, it went to the son of a major campaign contributor. This teenager would grow up to become a lawyer on some of the most-politically hot cases in a generation: The Pentagon Papers, Watergate, Iran/Contra, among many others.

His memories are both fascinating and horrifying. Fascinating because Sheehan places you directly inside the halls of power, and horrifying for the same reason. “Look, Danny,” one House investigator tells Sheehan, “if anyone is so ignorant that he doesn’t know that the Central Intelligence Agency has been smuggling heroin from Southeast Asia through Cuba into the United States for decades to secretly finance first the Nationalist Chinese and later their covert operations in Southeast Asia, then that person is too ignorant to function effectively in Washington, D.C.” At the same time, Sheehan is told, “Don’t make the foolish mistake of trying to tell the American people about the secret history of the United States.”

Sheehan resolved to do “everything I could to change that operating principle in Washington.”

Beginning with The Pentagon Papers—a case that echoes into today’s news over the people’s right to know what the government is doing—Sheehan has fulfilled that promise to himself. This memoir takes us directly inside Sheehan’s fearless mind.” – Foresight

This is a book for smart people who care about the Constitution, the Republic, and America the Beautiful -- the America of good people with big hearts and strong souls who do the best they can while trapped amidst a complex of corrupt systems that now include most labor unions, most non-profits, and most religions -- all the safety nets are gone. It is not an easy read but it could be the most important book you could read right now, as we prepare for the 2014-2020 civil war between the 99% and the 1%. For a sense of where I see Danny Sheehan in modern US history, see my review of Arsonist: The Most Dangerous Man in America. Danny Sheehan's is to the second American revolution as James Otis was to the Founding Fathers. The 1% and their political bi-opoly (the best of the servant class in the eyes of the 1%) are the target for a massive apolitical cross-cultural uprising rooted in natural law, social justice, and common sense.

The book cannot be fully appreciated without first understanding that the author has been a major player in every fundamental Constitutional case having to do with public agency -- the sovereignty of the public versus the assumption by the "government" that it has inherent powers once reserved for kings, and that the citizens "donate" (abdicate) their powers once they "elect" said government. I highly recommend Wikipedia's biography on Daniel_Sheehan_(attorney). This -- or the timeline below -- is what should have opened the book in the first place.

Danny Sheehan has always been bigger than life, brash, smart, and right in the middle of things. This tells the story of his career. It's an exciting and insightful account of some incredible moments in our history from his point of view, as he is involved in them. you may not agree with him, but he is honest and smart and hardworking and driven to uncover the truth, no matter what.

You are confronted with an enormous moral dilemma when you find yourself in the halls of power or holding hands with this countrys'decision-makers and discover, much to your horror, that their interests run contrary to the welfare of humanity at large--even worse that you have become a cog in their machinations of corruption and evil and that your efforts are being used to contribute to goals abhorent to everything you believe is good and right.

Most people find it easier, safer, to join the decievers--finding it more comfortable and rewarding to toss their beliefs to the wind. Others, a very few, however, will feel compelled to stand up--throw a wrench in the gears--try to change things--or at least slow them down--to sound the alarm to those on the outside. But theirs is only a voice in the wilderness and when you're inside the system, you either play the game according to the rules--or you get squashed like a bug by the powerful elite.

You can either try to effect change from the inside as part of the system or from the outside--though neither is quite effective.

Sheehan found away to work both from within and from without--and still preserve his credibility, his career and his life. We, the public, do not always hold such men in a positive light, at least in the beginning bacause we have long ago become victims of the decievers. But eventually the truth comes out and we are able to recognize it as such. Then men such as these are seen for what they really are--heroic plugs in the holes of the dikes without which we would all drown in a sea of lies.
Sheehans life and others like him are to be celebrated by good people everywhere.

What lies and deceptions has Sheehan been instrumental in exposing??

People's Advocate reads at times like a screen play with great dialogue and descriptions to set the scene. Even in his "defeat" in the Iran-Contra case, he does not lose heart. Sheehan is a giant. He cannot be beaten. I could not put the book down. I eagerly await his next move.

He inspires and delights. You cannot miss in reading this book. It is a gold mine. Buy it and read it and reread it.

Prospective buyers should be warned that there's a serious problem with this 600 page book--it's absolutely addictive reading. I picked it up early on a weeknight and finally had to put it down at 2 a.m. because I needed some sleep for work the next day.

if you've ever wanted to know what really goes on inside some of those high profile political trials that riveted the nation (Pentagon Papers, Karen Silkwood, Iran-Contra), Daniel Sheehan's personal and legal biography is your ticket to an inside seat. It's also your ticket to spend time with one of the most ardent and compelling American heroes I've ever read about. Truly, Danny Sheehan is the type of guy we've been told in these cynical days doesn't really exist. Talk about Horatio Alger! He was a poor kid from this really difficult home who just wanted to be an astronaut . . . But I'd better not give it away. Truth IS greater than fiction.

And what there is inside, good god! I didn't know that lawyers had to take such personal risks. I certainly didn't know that those huge trials I mentioned were just the tip of the iceberg of the most incredible shenanigans a government (or at least people hiding inside the government) could possibly be up to. This book was a huge revelation to me. I hope we see the author on 60 Minutes sometime soon because the country deserves to hear what he's done and what he knows. If I had the money and Hollywood connections I'd buy the film rights to this thing. It's a helluva story, amazing history, and a huge wake-up call. Thank you, Mr. Sheehan, for your life, your work, and your great book.

One small caveat: I hope the publisher hires a professional copyeditor for the next printing. This one had too many mistakes for such a big time book.
