I'd never heard the name George Whiteman before, but I've definitely seen his photographic art. He was the man who painted Don McLean's thumb for the more than 'plum' cover of "American Pie."

It turns out, he's got just as much a hand at heart-catching phrase as he does an eye for riveting images. "The Perennial Freshman" is the first in a biographical trilogy of Whiteman's illustrious life. The tale begins with early memories and takes Whiteman to the end of his service during the Korean War, which he served in Austria as a motor pool dispatcher.

His childhood could have beaten him down, but Whiteman describes harrowing events with humor and a wry adventurous twist. How many people can say they made a bus trip between California and New York on ten bucks? Admittedly, that was a much earlier time--but George was eight.

If you enjoy biographies, particularly taking place in the 1940's and 1950's, you're going to like "Freshman." I'm very much looking forward to the next installation, which will tell us about Hollywood.

Whiteman's prose is shot from a rocket and never slows down.

This is an autobiography? Even if unauthorized, here is a character you'd usually only find in fiction, fantasy fiction.

The author has a quiver full of antedotes you'll remember and try mightly to work in to some conversation.
Flat tire: to find the leaking air, spittle works best. Swear at the leak (rubber is multilingual so any language will do)
The car: Arizona: a defeated monochromatic landscape and ideal place for our secondhand car to surrender. The Studebaker committed suicide just west of Tucamcari.

Before you pick this book up clear the decks, you're not going to put it down.

The Perennial Freshman, by George S. Whiteman
If you are going to write your authobiography there are certain indispensables: a good memory, an interesting life and the ability to write. A photographer of distinction, George S. Whiteman certainly seems to have a good memory - a photographic one perhaps. He has also had an intersting life and in this first of three volumes he tells of his childhood, adolescence and experiences as a US soldier in post-war Europe. He also has an attractive writing style, which leaves the reader looking forward to later instalments.
Leslie Rocker, playwright, poet and novelist.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this, but, holy crap what a good read. American Pie, Gorgeous George, knife fights, and rabbit killing? What a life lived. An amazing book, and one I could personally relate too, in terms of the childhood issues. I cannot wait for the follow up book(s). His writing style is loose and breezy, and it's also a great insight into life in the 40's and 50's, since all I knew about that time beforehand was taken from Stand By Me and episodes of Flipper. Kudos, sir.
