I've been a fan of Deathstars since 2005 or so. I like their music a lot, but there has always been something holding me back from really LOVING it. Each album has songs that I think are absolute top-notch songs, but there was always something holding me back. I am happy to say that with The Perfect Cult, I finally I LOVE the entirety of this album. This is what they have been playing at for the last decade.

The songwriting on their last three albums always seemed a little lack-luster to me. Very much the same structure with the same feel for every song. This album however sees all the songs a little more fleshed out. Don't get me wrong, it still sounds like Deathstars, but all the subtle things they have done differently really help this album feel more "complete."

The first difference is the inclusion of live drums on every song (rather than programmed drums) and that is one of the major contributing factors to the reason I like his album so much. It feels raw. "Raw" like a band should feel. The drums, guitars, and bass all feel like a band played the tracks, and not like everything was programmed on a computer. This raw feel is tied together by the superb vocal editing. All the vocals sound clear, but they fit very well into the pocket of each song. Whiplasher uses his "whispery" voice a lot less on this album and that is definitely a good thing. During almost every chorus the BG vocals are all mixed huge and open, which helps give the songs a more dynamic feel. Great job on the vocal editing...really great!

And to top this whole "raw" feeling off is the incredible synth/keys programming. This is the area where the album really shines.

I have loved Deathstars since their debut album "Synthetic Generation" and as they've progressed, each album has gotten better and better. "Night Electric Night" was stunning and after their tour with Rammstein the pressure was on for a new album. "The Perfect Cult" not only met expectations but blew them away. They take some interesting chances on this album ("Bodies" in particular sounds like nothing they've ever done before) and it all works, straight across the board. There is not one bad track on this album. Stand-outs for me are the title track, "Explode", "Track, Crush & Prevail" and "Noise Cuts". The album ends with three bonus remixes that don't really add or detract anything but are a fun inclusion nonetheless. Highly recommended.
