Editorial Reviews

Suburban supermom Eileen Cleary (Academy Award® nominee Kathleen Turner) is the ultimate Catholic, and when she's nominated for the coveted Catholic Woman of the Year Award at her local parish, it looks like she's about to get the plaque to prove it. Only one final test remains - introducing her family to the church board for the seal of approval.

Now, she must finally face the truth about her nonconformist family - a truth she has been glossing over for years. Her gay daughter, Shannon (Emily Deschanel), is about to marry her life partner. Her unhappily married son Frank Jr. (Jason Ritter) is having an affair with the local manicurist. And Eileen's own marriage to a recovered alcoholic is pulling at the seams...

This heartfelt dysfunctional family comedy boasts a memorable performance from Academy Award® nominee Turner as the conflicted and comical matriarch, alongside a bright ensemble cast including Richard Chamberlain and Michael McGrady. Newcomer director Anne Renton keeps the pacing taut and crafts an honest, modern family tale, and writers Claire V. Riley and Paula Goldberg infuse just the right amount of seriousness and levity into their script, reminding us that family is never truly perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Family May 4, 2012
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Amazon Verified Purchase
Anne Renton's {her directorial debut}The Perfect Family is a solid and well made film. There are cliches and some obvious moments, but the performances of Kathleen Turner, Emily Deschanel and a very fine supporting cast rise above the cliches. Eileen Cleary, a devout catholic is nominated for an award, Catholic Woman of the Year. Her subsequent soul-searching, and efforts to make her not so perfect family perfect is the seam that holds this family drama together. I found it believable. Having grown up in the catholic church, none of it seemed over the top to me. Emily Deschanel does a fine turn as Shannon Cleary. She has several really well played scenes with Kathleen Turner. An excellent soundtrack to move the story works really well.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and plan to watch it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film!!! June 20, 2012
By Jah
Format:DVD
I saw this film at the Tribeca Film Festival last year with 2 friends and we all loved it. The writers did a fantastic job in coming up with a witty script with a plot that touches most people. Kathleen Turner did an incredible job as the central character in the dysfunctional Cleary family and her delivery was remarkable. Everyone should see this film, you will truly get a great laugh!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best movie nobody's seen
This is a movie about what really counts. It's about transforming from acting Catholic, to actually being Christian. It embraces many stereotypes, and makes you look beyond them. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars All in the Family on Steroids
If you are a Christian, get ready to be portrayed as a bigoted, two-faced, poser because you believe that marriage is between a man and a woman and that adultery is wrong. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars a bit cliche now, 20 years ago would have been edgy..great cast
Today this storyline is cliché, though 20 years ago this would have been edgy material.

There is a very strong cast with great performances. Turner is brilliant. Read more

Perhaps this was intended to appeal to Catholics. Shame it didn't say that in the description on the TV. Read more
