About the Author

Janice Stanger has a Ph.D. in Human Development and Aging from University of California, San Francisco. She is certified in plant-based nutrition through the T Colin Campbell Foundation and has an MBA from University of California, Berkeley. She is a frequent blogger, guest blogger, radio show guest, contributor to Veg World Magazine, and in-demand conference presenter. As an adult, the author went through multiple unsuccessful weight loss attempts, binge eating, and numerous chronic illnesses and debilitating pain. Her daughters led the way to health when they decided to stop eating meat at ages 11 and 13. Since following the Perfect Formula Diet the author is now in Perfect Health, at her Perfect Weight, and takes no prescription drugs (with ideal cholesterol, blood pressure, and glucose level).

I didn't think anything new could be written about food and diets. But this book takes a refreshingly novel approach to the subject and is full of startling facts. For example, I was astounded to learn of the relatively miniscule percentage of protein in human breast milk, which convincingly overturns the claim that humans can't get enough protein from plants. I was surprised to learn that olive and other supposedly "good" oils actually detract from optimum health. I was intrigued by the link between inflammation and a long list of diseases and the role diet plays in balancing pro- and anti-inflammatory forces. Finally, I was impressed by the overwhelmingly positive, life-affirming tone of the author and her courage in sharing intimate details about her path from eating disorders and illness to perfect weight and vibrant health. Read this book!

This book saved my life. I was stuck in the morass of doctors trying to "cure" me with medications and referrals to specialists like so many of my family and friends. After successfully taking a very toxic medication for a parasitic infection, the symptoms remained for many months. The doctor kept re-testing me and then referred me to a gastroenterologist. After reading Dr. Stanger's book, I eliminated lactose and the symptoms disappeared. My very healthy 87 year old father almost lost his kidneys recently from taking too many medications prescribed by too many specialists. After reading this book, we had the doctors flush out my father's system (on IV drip in intensive care), reduce his meds, and put him on a non-inflammatory diet and his kidneys are good as new. He's golfing again, going to the gym, etc. Two of my friends have severe auto immune diseases, another is getting a double hip replacement as we speak (she's only 61), one is on oxygen, etc. All of them are stuck in the medical system as it is, relying on specialists and medications without at least trying to focus on diet. We all want the easier softer way...popping some pills. READ THIS BOOK!!!!

I have a health care blog, but I had mixed feelings about reading & reviewing this book for that blog. I thought I would be wading through tons of dry, scientific data, while wondering how to make it interesting for my blog review. Well, was I pleasantly surprised.

The book has plenty of scientific data, but you don't need a degree to understand it. It is very easy to read and follow. The author, Janice Stanger, PhD., makes great use of analogies and stories to illustrate key points. Not once did I feel the need to go to other sources for an explanation.

The Perfect Formula Diet walks you through a science-based diet built on rotating six kinds of whole foods. It helps you create what Dr. Stanger calls your "not meal" plans that are personalized, flexible eating plans. The book teaches you how to listen to your body for improved health. It offers evidence that dispels or clarifies long-held nutrition and health myths. For example, it discusses how calcium really has very little to do with strong bones. Who knew?

But, to dismiss this book as just another diet book doesn't do it justice. I write a lot about sharing your passion. This is not a diet book for Dr. Stanger. It's a lifestyle and a commitment - one she lives every day. The Perfect Formula Diet goes beyond its plant-based nutrition to talk about the toxic chemicals in our environment and the choices we make that affect our planet. Don't worry, it doesn't preach at you.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this well-written, thoughtful book. That Dr. Stanger believes in it shows. Even if you are not ready to commit to plant-based nutrition, there are many thought-provoking ideas that make it well worth reading.

I have to say The Perfect Formula Diet has largely impacted my life. I didn't read this book initially to find another diet for weight loss. I am already achieving some weight loss with watching what I eat. Like the turtle, slow but sure. What I love about this book is that it addresses the same issues I have which are chronic sinusitis, and inflammation. The whole foods approach to nutrition and health makes so much sense and is really the truth that Americans need to know. I am taking a different approach to eating for health. It is fun and it is working! Please, please, please know that this is not just another diet book. Janice Stanger is spot on with everything I need to know to transform from an unhealthy and typical American eater, to a slim, vibrant and healthy person. Must read! The Perfect Formula Diet

I highly commend Dr. Stanger for her eminently readable, pragmatic, and compelling effort to optimize both personal health and global protection. My health has been generally good since becoming vegetarian 22 years ago. However, having a sedentary/high stress work life, continuing to over-indulge my sweet tooth, becoming older, and not getting enough exercise all contributed to a 30 to 35 pound weight gain over the last five years. The Perfect Formula Diet has been instrumental in reversing this negative trend. I lost 10# in my first three weeks of scrupulously following Dr. Stanger's recommendations. I call it "eating only real food." I enjoy what I eat and am more satisfied after eating; I don't get ravenously hungry between meals; I take pleasure in cooking for myself and others; and I feel good about the food choices that I make.

Because I was already vegetarian, it was easy for me to make the transition to being vegan. The section of Dr. Stanger's book that has been most helpful to me is Chapter 8: The Perfect Start. I attribute my success thus far to observing these critical elements: 1) making a sincere commitment to eat only whole plant foods, 2) ensuring I have such foods readily available, and 3) charting the beneficial results of this way of eating. I thank Dr. Stanger for her clear and convincing emphasis on these and other guidelines in the book as well as ample evidence of the importance of a plant-based diet. I am indebted to Dr. Stanger for helping me improve my life and inspiring others to do the same!
