A woman flees to Venice to escape her dangerous past in this electrifying novel of intrigue, psychological tension and suspense…

Ever since she was a little girl, Lucy Riddick has dreamed of Venice. When she needs to get away, fast, it seems the ideal place to lose herself. The secret she’s been keeping from her boyfriend and her friends has finally caught up with her and Lucy needs to disappear. There’s no better time to pack her bags and head for Italy. But what if, when she sets foot in Venice, Lucy finds that the one thing she has been running from, the one thing she has been trying to escape, is already there, lying in wait? Time to run away again? Or time to end the chase, once and for all?

Emily Barr's books follow a formula of a female narrator who is pretty gullible and not too street smart who has to overcome those taking advantage of her through her stupidity. The character has to be not too bright for the plot to be plausible but usually the main character such as Tansy from the series starting with Backpack isn't too likeable. With the Perfect Lie, the main character Lucy Riddick, although a bit stupid is actually fairly likeable, someone maybe you would hang out with.

The Perfect Lie starts of in a modern day Cornish seaside town with regular flashbacks to the main characters childhood starting in 1988. Lucy (back then Marianne) slowly reveals a life of abuse starting with her deadbeat mother who demands she and her brother promise to follow an absurd track into their future. We know modern day Lucy is terrified of something from her past catching up with her, we don't know what it is (although it's pretty easy to predict, as are all events in the novel). All Lucy is telling us, which is even less than those she has come to know in her new town is that she needs to keep a low profile. Unfortunately for her, one of her best friend's young daughters need rescuing from a cliff and a fame hungry teen videotapes it all and sends it to the media. Has what she is running from noticed the footage? Will she have to flee and start again? Is there actually anything to run from at all or is Lucy just insane?

I really liked this book, more so than Barr's others. I found the modern day side story revolving around Eliza and her depressed failed dating a bit unnecessary but some readers may see it as a bonus I guess.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Lie January 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Another good Emily Barr read. I was unsure as to where the story was going with this and what the big 'lie' was. I found this distracting as I already read fast and it made me read even faster than usual to find out what was going on - a shame as it did spoil the enjoyment for me. Having now read a couple of Emily Barr's books I can already pick up that she follows a formula. Usually I find this frustrating with authors, however she has a style that makes me want to purchase more of her books and keep reading.

It is an exciting adventure, with a good romantic ending. The heroine solves her problem. I don't want to reveal the history of this terror.

Good writer. I haven't yet noticed similarities in plots in her books so that makes me happy. I don't want to keep reading the same book.
