Double-blind test results are in: this product is worthless.,

I had a friend challenge my skepticism about this product, which he had informed me of. I have a 900 bottle cellar with wines up to 25 years old, and my friend is a wine lover also(but not as prolific as a collector). Neither of us is really an "expert", but we like wine and can taste the difference between a Caberenet Franc and a Cabernet Sauvignon. I once correctly separated 1996, 97, and 98 Chiantis to prove to someone that there was a difference, and my friend spotted the Rioja ringer in a 6-wine panel of "French reds". So we're no sommeliers, but we also do not have pallets of stone. My friend bought one device, borrowed a second, and we each put a $50 bottle up as a prize, winner take all.
We tried the product on two bottles: one, a local $8 2003 Pinot Nero (aka Pinot Noir but we're in Italy), the other a $30 1999 Brunello di Montalcino. Our method was to decant half the bottle, put the other half in the device as instructed, then after one hour had neutral observers (our wives) pour two glasses per person per sample (8 total), and mark them with colored symbol labels (square, circle, star, triangle...) and mix the 4 glasses per person up. They did make sure we each got 4 different glasses. The pourers left the room to watch "Sideways" on DVD (really!) while we tasted the wine with bread and cheese. Well, the Pinot didn't "become" Brunello (so I think you can discount the reviewer claiming Pinot became Cabernet...they probably couldn't taste the difference before, either). Furthermore, neither of us could tell any difference between the two samples. We could tell the Pinot from the Brunello, and we liked the Brunello a LOT more, but that's all. When we guessed our answers were precisely 50% wrong, just what chance would predict. My assessment: this product is worthless. It does force you to wait for your wine to BREATHE, a mysterious process which requires only your corkscrew and an hour or two (less if you decant). This magical process can improve any red wine and some whites. I don't really know how it works, but it does. And it works with or without this silly toy. If you pour and sip, you'll like your wine less than opening, WAITING, then pouring. Decanting is even better. Don't waste your money!

Just wondering if anyone's done a double-blind test to see if drinkers can tell the difference between the sommeliered wine and non-sommeliered wine. I have my doubts. File this with your magnetic insoles, your Q-ray bracelets and your Monster cable.

More than perfect!,

The Perfect Sommelier is aptly named, it does what the name implies...outstanding wine. Tried it on a relatively light red "La Crema" Pinot Noir.A truly signifcant wine that I have been drinking almost exclusively for many years. I tested as the instructions called for and could not believe the difference in a good wine. The nose, bouquet was more apparent, wine opened with more fruit, was smoother, less aggressive and what a finish! Could not believe the result until I repeated this tasting a number of times. At a home gathering I blew away several of my colleagues who are prominent physicists and a Ph.D.in chemistry, they were all amazed at the reults that we severly dented my wine cellar with repeated tastings. It WORKS!
