Yarrow, best known as the Peter of Peter, Paul, and Mary, here offers a wonderful compilation of bedtime songs, complete with a CD. Beginning with a warm introduction from Yarrow about singing to children, the book continues with two-page spreads containing the lyrics of the songs, set against Widener’s imaginative art, filled with angels, children, and families. Not all the songs say “nighty-night.” Along with “Hush, Little Baby” and “Brahms’ Lullaby,” Yarrow includes “On Top of Old Smokey,” “Down in the Valley,” and “The Water Is Wide,” selections that may seem odd until one listens to the CD. Yarrow, along with his silver-voiced daughter, Bethany, croon them in such a sweet, quiet way that all their songs become lullabies. For “fellow pickers,” Yarrow offers the lyrics separately with chords; and for those who want further information, a history of each song is included. Looking for more? A companion volume, Favorite Folk Songs (2008), contains winners like “Skip to My Lou” and “Sloop John B.” Preschool-Grade 2. --Ilene Cooper

hated the cd that came with it. the singers don't stick to the original melody or correct time of the music, which makes it really hard to learn and sing along with. Read morePublished on January 6, 2011 by J. Miller
