I enjoyed the Gold Key period of Phantom comics recently released by Hermes. Now I have the Charlton era comics in a handsome volume! The packaging is great and the printing quality is very good as well. Hermes has taken great care with both volumes. I look forward to the King Comics July 2012 release by Hermes.

The Phantom has always been a favorite comic strip character of mine but here you have collected the stories by the great artist Jim Aparo when he was in high [great] form. It reminds me of Neal Adams art but in many ways I prefer it and find it more consistent. If you know what I am talking about you won't be disappointed.

Collecting "The Phantom" turned into a near-obsession for this phan. Close to 1200 issues of Australia's Frew Phantom comics, Indrajal and Diamond Digest comics from India, treasured editions of Moonstone Books' run on the character and the so-so offerings from Dynamite Entertainment somehow distracted me from this first collection of Charlton Comics. Even though I bought it, this first-rate book went directly to the shelf. Maybe I expected it to be like Gold Key and King comics and contain rewrites of the superb Lee Falk-Sy Barry run on the character in the comic strips. Nothing could be further from the truth. As with the releases from Moonstone Books, these are all-original, beautifully drawn (often by Jim Aparo) comics that stand with the very best ever printed in America. The stories by Dick Wood and Norm DiPluhm may not have the charm found in the writings of Lee Falk or the edginess of those produced by Egmont's Team Fantomet (and printed in Australia's Frew Comics), but they have held up well over the years. This is the most satisfying volume published to date in the Hermes Press series of comic book collections. Only the upcoming "Charlton Years Vol. 5," which will present the amazing artwork of Don Newton, can said to be as good. This is one case where I don't mind being a Johnny-come-lately. What a find, what a book, what a joy! Highly recommended! By the way, those who mentioned the "sloppy" printing failed to realize that Charlton was one of the few (if not the only) publishers to use rubber instead of metal plates in printing their releases. While this may have been fine for most other products, it was a disservice to the comic-book line and the artists who labored over them. Hermes Press deserves nothing but praise for their efforts in restoring them so beautifully!

I thought I would not get a chance to read my childhood Fav. again but this is a collector's item, may be one day my grandkids would know how we had fun before the PS3/iPhone even TV for that matter.
