About the Author

From the time Rick DeStefanis began hunting deer fifty years ago with a thirty-two-pound Bear recurve bow all the way up to the present, he has gathered the knowledge, facts, and nuances to use in the most focused resource available for deer hunting enthusiasts. In The Philosophy of Big Buck Hunting DeStefanis has concisely crafted a guide that is as easy to read as it is to apply. All the tips and tools at his disposal are presented so the average hunter can assimilate this information into his or her own hunting repertoire quickly and efficiently, including: • Signs • Scouting • Stand placement • Wind direction and Scent control • How to properly approach shooting By unselfishly sharing his knowledge and experience in order to spread his enthusiasm for Whitetail Deer hunting, DeStefanis has produced a guide that is unquestionably the most important companion for those who must hunt high-pressured public land or timber lease land, regardless of skill level. It is a must-have for novice and seasoned hunters alike. Comprehensive, yet not overly burdensome, The Philosophy of Big Buck Hunting is a text of extraordinary importance in its genre that contributes an insight destined to be recognized as one of the best ever. Rick DeStefanis began hunting when he was nine years old with a thirty-two-pound Bear recurve and a handful of mismatched cedar arrows. He now lives in northern Mississippi where he has hunted for the last fifty years.

I have read quite a few books on Whitetail Hunting and this one sums up all the great points. Don't get me wrong though, this isn't a magic bullet to becoming a "Chuck Adams" caliber of hunter. Many books seem to be written for specific areas but this book does a great job at providing tips that can be used in almost all areas. My 12 year old son is reading the book right now and I am sure will be a much more attentive hunter afterwards. If you are looking for a book to give you some new insights into tagging big bucks this is it. Lastly I would like to compliment the writer for the simplicity of the read. I don't want to spend 2 months reading a tips and tricks book and the author does a fantastic job and making concise, understandable points. I was able to finish this book in four days reading an hour a night. I will however use it as a reference until I find that the tips are just a part of my routine.

If you have already read a few books on hunting mature bucks, you won't find much new info here. Not a bad book just wish I had read this book about 6 years ago, almost no take-aways for me personally. Lots of good reminders and refreshers but nothing extraordinary. On the other hand if you are just turning your attention to hunting solely for mature bucks and have not filled your shelf with books and boxes with articles on the subject, this book is a great first step and you will certainly find it very enlightening and easy to read.

Like the author of this book, I have hunted public lands most of my life. It can be a little discouraging at times, especially when you see all the hunting programs on TV with all the monster bucks! This book has given me encouragment that I too can take large bucks on public land. The author tells you exactly how you can do it too. I didn't think I could learn anything from this book, but I was wrong. If you want to read a very good book, for all levels of deer hunters, I strongly recommend that you buy and read this book.
