David Middleton, of Danby, Vermont, is the author of several books including The Photographer's Guide to the Maine Coast, The Photographer's Guide to Vermont, The Nature of Vermont, The Nature of America and The Lobstering Life. He conducts outdoor photography workshops across the country.

Rod Barbee is a professional nature photographer and writer whose work has appeared in Outdoor Photographer, Nature's Best, Northwest Travel, Backpacker, National Parks, and other magazines, in addition to being featured in numerous calendars, catalogs, and books. He lives in Port Ludlow, Washington.

David Middleton
David Middleton is a full-time professional outdoor photographer, writer and naturalist. During his more than 20 year-career, David has traveled extensively throughout all of the US and Canada and much of Central and South America , South Africa and Australia. His photography and writing have been featured in many magazines, books and calendars. David is a Contributing Editor of Outdoor Photographer Magazine and the Executive Director of the Photographers Alliance Workshops company.
David has photographed and written 10 books including Ancient Forests, American Vision, The Photographer's Guide series and The Nature of America, the largest nature photography book project ever undertaken, and, his most recent, The Nature of Vermont. His book about the old New England dairy farm he has worked at for 5 years will come out in June. David's current book project is about the lobstermen of the Gulf of Maine.
David has lead more than 150 photography tours and taught more than 200 photography workshops across the country. He is a gifted and enthusiastic teacher who finds great joy helping others discover their creative potential. Every year he views and critiques thousands of images and teaches close to hundreds of photography students. David lives in the heart of the Green Mountains in southern Vermont.

This book was amazingly specific in directions of how to best view an incredible scenery. It was great more for its direction of where to go, park, or stand than the photography tips. The author gave great detail such as tips for how to find the best parking lots, how to avoid the tourist packed spots, and how to find unmarked trails to find fantastic angles in isolation. We used it as our primary guide for three days down the coast and really loved it. Note that the order of the book is generally north to south.

Excellent Resource May 6, 2007

Having this along with my on my recent trip up the Oregon Coast was absolutely invaluable. It helped me choose which turnouts to take and which to bypass. I loved the included suggestions of what to do according to the weather, since several of my days were overcast and drizzle, rendering some of the views drab or nonexistant. I wish there were more books like this available for everywhere I want to go!

But it was a great help. The authors have provided excellent tips about certain locations, especially around the most popular sites. There is a bit of discussion about light and textures, but not quite enough. I spent a week there, which is not long enough to make firm opinions, but long enough to realize that there is a lot more to prepare in terms of photographic strategy than the book provides. For example, the real problem of sunrise and sunset. The horizon is almost always packed with thick clouds, so most sunsets are not what one would have imagined. I would have loved to know beforehand if there is any place where you can get a good sunset shot.

The book lacks in some other areas. For example, there is very little discussion about tides, which is extremely important matter for photographing ocean coast. Another major omission is the subject of ephemeris and how to use them.

full of info so it is a good book to take with you on your tour of the coast but a few more photographs would be nice. just my two cents
