More About the Author

Lee Foster is a veteran and award-winning travel journalist, winner of eight Lowell Thomas Awards, including Lee being named Lowell Thomas Travel Journalist of the Year (Silver Winner).

Lee lives in Berkeley, California and develops travel books, ebooks, apps, articles, and photos, especially about Northern California and Washington DC. About half of his total work is writing and half is photography. All of Lee's involvement in travel journalism, including 200 worldwide destination coverages, can be seen on his website at www.fostertravel.com.

Lee's newest book/ebook is Northern California Travel: The Best Options. This book charts 30 major trip ideas that Lee feels are the most interesting rationales for exploring the northern half of the state. The book covers the territory from the Oregon border through Big Sur on the West and Death Valley on the East.

Lee is also co-author and co-photographer of the recent Dorling Kindersley book Back Roads California.

Lee has four other recent travel books, three of which are also ebooks. They include two travel and photo guides from Countryman Press/Norton, titled The Photographer's Guide to San Francisco and The Photographer's Guide to Washington DC. Lee won a Lowell Thomas award for his travel guide Northern California History Weekends. Lee's travel literary book, Travels in an American Imagination, is about his vision that we live in both the most wondrous and the most horrific time ever to be alive. That book won a Best Travel Commentary Award from the Bay Area Independent Publishers Association.

Lee has six earlier legacy books, which are sought by collectors who want to possess all of Lee's books.

I travel a few times a year to the Bay Area and I love to take pictures, but I'm hardly a professional. As an amatuer, I really enjoyed this book as a guide to lead me to certain places to get the shots that will impress my friends! The Photographer's Guide to San Francisco is a great guide for all photographers!

Too many photographer's "how to" guides are patronizing or rather lightly shrug off issues such as transportation, parking, breaks for food, etc.

Lee Foster's Photographer's Guide to San Francisco proved to be a welcome exception. This was a book written for real people, you and me, and takes us in hand as though we were friends or relatives. Sensitive to our photo interests, it is packed with information telling us how to get to the right spot at the right time of day, what troubles we might encounter and how to avoid them, options for parking, and good spots to stop for a bite to eat.

The photos in this book are good illustrations of possible winning images we might aspire to bring home ourselves, and great incentives to re-visit spots which we have photographed previously without having had access to some of the good advice of this author. To my delight, it also revealed some special and hidden treasures of San Francisco that are not readily apparent to an out-of-towner.

Lee Foster is not just a good writer. He is also a true artist with his camera and patient enough to be a gifted teacher through his books.

I gave this book to my boss who is an amateur photographer, even took photo classes at the college level. He loves it and said it is very well written.

I gotta say I love this book. I live in the East Bay and even as a "Local" I find it hard to give family and out of town guests a "tour" of San Francisco. (Probably due to the fact that locals that live in the East Bay don't really do the touristy stuff too often.) Anyway, this book is a must have for people who want to take great photos of San Francisco. The best thing about this book is the photos come out beautifully. This book reminds me of all the beautiful things in this city that a "local" takes advantage of. One of my favorite photos of this book is the cover at Baker Beach. I have not been there since I was a child, and it was great to be able to take out of town guests there to look at this awesome bridge. This book has inspired me to go out into this beautiful city and take more photos.

I found this book to be two guides in one. First, I used this book as a photo guide. It minimized the time I needed to organize my photo excursions. I am very pleased with the photos I have taken with the author's guidance. Second, I used this book as a travel guide. It outlined the various items of interest I should see in the Bay Area. The clear maps and written background for each area were very helpful to me as a tourist.

An excellent source of information for the photographer that wants all of the details. I even listened to it on my Kindle while I jotted down notes for my trip. I like a book that tells you when the best time is to be at a certain spot for the best shot and what settings work best. I also like the inside opinions of the author's experience with this area and what is good to experience or avoid! It will help me out greatly for my trip to San Francisco!
