In the 1980s, I pulled this book from the shelves of the public library in my home town of Lafayette; looked through it in the library, but did not check it out. That was the last time I saw it; I have been searching for it every since. It definitely sparked my interest in learning more about steam power over twenty years ago.

Now that I have had a chance to see it; I am still impressed with it. It is just the focus I remembered -- it covered steam power of every kind, and gave examples from around the world. The chapters are as follows; each was written by a different author:

Introduction
Prelude: Fountains and Fire-machines
Pump and Early Rotative Machines
Steam on the Railway
Steam at Sea
Steam on the Road, on the Land, and in the Air
Boilers and Accessories
Electricity Generation
Steam in the Factory
Major Events in the Development of Steam Power
Preserved Steam Engine Locations
Glossary

If you are interested in steam power and want to learn more, this book is for you. If like me you have an extensive knowledge of steam power; this book will likely still "fill the gaps" in your knowledge base. Now that I have reviewed it again after years of educating myself on steam power worldwide, I can still highly recommend it.

It was written in Britain, but it is worldwide in scope; so there is lots of material on the United States as well as the UK and Europe. Like most books for the masses published by Octopus in the 1970s-1980s, it is rich in photographs and drawings; the drawings of the various marine engines and steamships are especially insightful.

This is a well-written book on steam power from its earliest days. It is presented from a distinctly British point of view but this is all right since much of the early development of steam power during the Industrial Revolution took place in England. The text is very thorough and covers marine, railroad and automotive or land traction applications. There are even a few paragraphs on steam aircraft. It could use a few more diagrams and illustrations to support the text. There are sufficient photographs. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the subject

Received my book in excellent condition at a very fair price just as advertised. Thanks for a good sale.

This was a Christmas gift to an avid train collector. I had been looking for this book for a few years and was excited to see it on Amazon. I chose not to purchase a new book, and opted for a used. I had to depend on the descriptions. I did not buy the least expensive used, but opted for the more expensive one, anticipating the condition to be comparable to the price. I am hugely disappointed that the owner described this book as "like new." It was NO WHERE near that description. I paid $25 for a broke spine, tattered book jacket and worn pages. It was deceptive, misleading advertising (I believe the term is "FALSE ADVERTISING") and I hesitate to purchase any other item on Amazon.com due to this experience.
