Book Description

Finn & Ginny’s parents are lost back in time, and the two young twins have decided to go back to early America to find them. Their search takes the twins to the Mayflower where they discover that the Pilgrims had far more adventures than they had ever realized.
This first book in the Our America series is designed to teach the real story of the Pilgrims in such a fun way that the reader won’t even realize that it’s educational. The Pilgrim Adventure is based on actual accounts written by the Pilgrims themselves, and kids who read this book will find that by the end of the story they may know more about the Pilgrim’s adventures than their parents do. Ages 10 and up.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Each book [in the Our America series] is only about 130 pages in length and the reading level is appropriate for about fourth grade and up. While they are relatively easy to read, they are very well written. I was surprised to find myself enjoying reading these books more than most historical fiction for this level.
-Cathy Duffy of Cathy Duffy Reviews-

The book is engaging, fun, historically accurate, creative, and great for educational and entertaining family read aloud.
-Richele McFarlin of Families.com-

....I could not put this heart-tugger down!
-Lisa Keva of Homeschool Circus-

As in the first book I found myself forgetting this was supposed to be educational. The story really draws the reader into the tale.
-Joy of Homeschool Literature-

Never mind the mind-numbing and biased textbooks to learn history....you and your children will learn far more from reading Ms. Kilbride's books and be far more entertained as well.
-Gail Nagasako, author of "Homeschooling Why and How"

Thank you Ms. Kilbride, this captivating book is a keeper to add to our early American time period.
-Tina of Newbeehomeschooler-

Sue weaves great historical detail into the story in such a realistic way.

-Jackie of Quaint Scribbles-

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating History Lesson for Family May 4, 2012
By eCalc
Format:Paperback
I read this aloud to my 4 year old son and 6 and 8 year old daughters as part of our homeschool. They begged for more each day. It was a great way to spark their interest. We ended up doing an entire unit study on Pilgrims as a result of the their interest after reading this book. I was surprised that it even kept my 4 year old son still and engaged. They were particularly drawn into the book as we read the first chapter about the twins' missing parents. Nothing like a little tragedy to capture their hearts. The twins travel back in time to find their parents. I like that they spend a considerable chunk of time back in the pilgrim days. We also enjoy other books that have the element of time travel (magic tree house series), but this book differs in the fact that the twins spend a full year immersed in the historical time period. We eagerly await the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Made Our History Study Come Alive! April 18, 2012
Format:Paperback
I loved this book! It was well written and held the attention of all three of my children, all varying in ages from 8-13 years. Mrs. Kilbride easily drew us into the story right away, and I loved how it brought to life that time in history. Mrs. Kilbride has seamlessly woven in many facts, true to life characters, and even historical terms in such a way that it never felt as if we were reading a history textbook! It is always my desire to read living books to my children to help them grasp history in a fun and enjoyable way. "Our America, The Pilgrim Adventure" did just that! We anxiously anticipate the release of the rest of the "Our America" series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooray for History! April 16, 2012
Format:Paperback
I read this book with my 7 year old son. When I first handed the book to him, he flipped through it and told me it looked boring, there wasn't even a single picture. I asked him to try it out and he agreed. That evening, we read through 5 chapters! (He wouldn't let me put it down!) He was hooked after the first couple of pages. He really got into the story, the characters and their adventures. He and I both learned a lot about the pilgrims who crossed the ocean on the Mayflower. The book allowed us to carry on conversation after the reading was finished each night, like how he would have felt in that situation or what he would have thought...We can't wait for the next book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining & Imaginative History Tale! October 21, 2012
Format:Paperback
A great adventure story weaving in a little mystery, will grasp all kids attention and keep those pages turning to see what will happen next! Bringing light to important historical times in an engaging way is ideal in having kids completely understand and grasp the specific time period. Susan, the author, has captured this and given kids the opportunity to learn about history - facts, terms - in a very entertaining and imaginative way. I look forward to more books in the series ... and so do my kids!

My son could not put this book down. He is an avid reader and often exclaims "this is my favorite book!" The Pilgrim Adventure was no exception. He has been asking me if the next book in the series is out yet so I know he really loved it. I am just happy to find entertaining historical fiction for kids and hope that Susan Kilbride keeps writing!

More About the Author

Susan Kilbride is a homeschooling mother with a degree in biology. A few years ago she noticed that many homeschooling parents are either uncomfortable teaching their children science, or just don't have the time to do the necessary research to teach their children science. Susan wrote her first book, "Science Unit Studies for Homeschoolers and Teachers," with these parents in mind, using the same methods that she used when teaching her own son.

Since then, Susan has started the "Our America" history series--chapter books designed to teach American history by telling the stories of the people who lived it. She has also written a Kindle eBook titled "How to Teach About Electricity for Ages 8-13."
