Dave Oliphant's poems are dazzling, full of wit, and generosity. Furthermore, they swing like crazy, as might be said of the jazz musicians he frequently invokes. His love of his home state, Texas, is evident throughout the collection, but the range of his concerns is truly broad. Author of something like 20 books, including studies of Latin American poets (he is bilingual), his poetry is not "academic" but lively and engaging. He is one of my favorite poets.

Five stars. Highly recommended new work by one of Texas' most tried and trusted poets. A veritable kaleidoscope of themes and people and places--mostly in Texas--,
these 91 delightful and thought-provoking poems are selected from some eleven volumes representing fifty years of Dave's poetry. His intelligence and sharp observation are informed by a friendly acquaintance with the humanities, especially literature and music. Over these fifty years, the poet has developed a rhythmic style unmistakably his: seemingly simple and colloquially Texan, it works its magic with syntax and images that are full of surprises.
