The Pinballs is an excellent tale of three children who's lives take an unexpected twist. First, there is Harvey, a thirteen year old boy who's father was careless. When the happiest moment of Harvey's life was supposed to happen, his father was going to a poker game. As Harvey continuously tried to enter the car, his father denied him of getting in. While Harvey finally tried to enter through the opposite side of the car, his father accidentally put the car into forward instead of reverse and broke both of Harvey's legs. Harvey was then sent to a foster home because his mother had left him and was unable to take care of him. Then there is Thomas J. who was abandoned by his parents at the age of two. He walked up the driveway of the Benson Twins, an eighty two year old set of female twins. The twins then kept Thomas J. for six years because he was such good help around the house and garden. At the age eighty-eight, the twins broke their hips. When the authorities came to the Benson's house, Thomas J. was then discovered and was take to the same foster home as Harvey. Lastly, there is Carlie. She is rude and usually doesn't say anything nice. Her stepfather, Russell, was abusive to Carlie and had hit her so hard once that she got a concussion. After taking Russell's abuse for so long, Carlie was sent to the same foster home as the two boys. Throughout the book, the personalities of the three characters progress and you find out more about their backgrounds as well as getting to see the story through each of their points of view. The Pinballs is truly a great book for many to read and enjoy with family, friends and anyone else who likes good reading. I would highly recommend this book to any of my friends.

This is a good book for children as well as those who work with children in foster care or DFCS situations. Our daughters enjoyed it when they were young, and I use it as a resource to give to folks in care-giving situations for foster children
