About the Author

W.V. "Duffy" Graves was a pipe fitter/pipe fitter foreman for over 25 years. After retiring from Shell Chemical, he taught pipe fitting at Lee College in Baytown, Texas for several years while staying active in the pipefitting profession. During this time he saw the need for a handy, easy to use reference manual that could be carried in the field. The result was The Pipe Fitters Blue Book and its companion, The Pipe Fabricators Blue Book. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

There is a lot of useful information in this book. I highly recommend it if you are in the welding profession. They have pipe take-offs, offsets, orange peeling of pipe, and fish mouthing of pipe information. The information is a little tricky to read at times- some of the tables force you to back and forth between the tables to be able to read them. If you know what you are looking for, you can find it in this book.

The Pipe Fitters Blue Book is a complete reference guide for a professional pipe fitter. It is the only reference guide allowed for while takeing NCCER test. It is by far the most complete and usefull book in the field. I highly recomend this book for all pipe fitters. I have others pipe fitting manuals and guides but this book has the best information. This book is written by pipe fiiter and it is for pipe fitters.

This book is particularly useful as the quick answer to how many bolts are in a standard 8" flange, what is the wall thickness of a schedule 80 6" pipe, what length of bolts or lugs are needed for this particular flange, and so fourth. It is a bit pricey at $25, but if it lasts a career it will be worthwhile in time saved.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is in the pipefitting business. Once I learned of it from other welders I work with I knew I had to have it. Amazon is the place to get it at a reasonable price. So if any of you welders need a pipefitters book Mr Graves is here on amazon and easy to purchase.

The book was written in 1973 and revised in 2010 yet it still has 44 pages of trig tables. Seriously? Who uses trig tables in these days of pocket calculators and smart phones? Granted, some places don't let you have a phone in the construction area however pocket calculators are so ridiculously cheap and everyone allows that. You aren't doing these long calculations with the trig table values without a calculator anyway, are you? On the other hand, there are 15 blank pages for "notes." I used these to paste in some typed abbreviations and their meanings--something that I think the book should have had to begin with.

The rolling offset examples are confusing. There is a much simpler way using simple trig, but then again I see most (all?) other reference books teaching it this way. No wonder so many people get confused.

This book has a lot of information in it that will help anyone striving to be a pipefitter. It also has good information for bolt up hands like required stud sizes, wrench sizes, and so forth. You can use it to design stencils for coping and that. I really love this book, however, there is an app for iPhone that is considerably quicker to use than the book. With that in mind, a lot of production facilities and refineries don't allow cell phones and therefore the app would be useless. I used both back when I was working towards being a welder. It's a must have for a pipefitter, no doubt.
