Book Description

After setting out to break the curse that binds them together, the pirate Ananna and the assassin Naji find themselves stranded on an enchanted island in the north with nothing but a sword, their wits, and the secret to breaking the curse: complete three impossible tasks. With the help of their friend Marjani and a rather unusual ally, Ananna and Naji make their way south again, seeking what seems to be beyond their reach.

Unfortunately, Naji has enemies from the shadowy world known as the Mists, and Ananna must still face the repercussions of going up against the Pirate Confederation. Together, Naji and Ananna must break the curse, escape their enemies — and come to terms with their growing romantic attraction.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Thrilling action combines with surprising character revelations in this satisfying sequel."
-Kirkus Reviews

"This book worked so well as a duology, so very well. It’s a very sensory book, in that it really hits the senses: the sounds and smells of exotic cities, the crashing of waves and the scent of sea salt, cannons and pistols and new languages, magical or otherwise."
-Jet Black Ink

5.0 out of 5 stars timeless tale with modern sensibilities June 18, 2013
By Sue B.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the second half of The Assassin's Curse and it may be read as a stand-alone, but this would be an insane mistake. There's no reason to deprive yourself of the start of Anana's and Naji's story, and reading the two books one right after the other is the ideal way to go about it. It took me a little while to get back into the story since I read Book 1 a few months ago, the beginning does not immediately grab. But a little patience is rewarded and the pacing picks right up. These books take place in a world with magic and pirates--who wouldn't want to be there?--and the setting is marvelously realized. The Assassin's Curse was a story of the desert, and The Pirate's Wish a story of Ananna's home: the sea. Ms. Clarke paints both settings and this whole magical world beautifully and with detail, also unobtrusively. The setting is always dovetailed with the story. Ananna's voice is unique: crabby, crude, heroic, lovable, loyal, sarcastic; not your typical young heroine. She carries the story and you root for her to find happiness. Female relationships and characters are strong in The Pirate's Wish and I loved that. Ananna and the manticore, Marjani, Princess Saida--I don't want to give too much away, but these relationships are a strong and interesting theme in the book. Of course there is also the romance of Ananna and Naji. Naji is a wonderful romantic hero: dark, brooding, scarred, magical, glowing tattoos, I mean Wow! Where are these guys? They are well matched as sparring and bantering partners, but real love is still undecided. The romance is a bit complicated with curses and blood magic, but the question of how Naji really feels seems to go on a bit long, and, even with the magical help they receive, Ananna's insight and understanding seem artificially slowed to fit the timing of the plot. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great conclusion to the duology! June 29, 2013
Format:Paperback
One of my favorite fantasy books of last year was The Assassin's Curse I fell in love with Ananna and Naji and was absolutely beside myself with excitement when I received the sequel, THE PIRATE'S WISH. I was actually in the middle of another book at the time and dropped it like a hot potato, because I couldn't wait another second to read about my favorite pirate and assassin's continuing adventures.

The sequel picks up right where book one left off. Ananna and Naji are stranded on a dangerous island, and it's beginning to take its toll. They're snappy, on edge, and it seems that the fragile trust and friendship they built in book one is on the verge of a total collapse. Even if they do escape the island (which of course they do - it wouldn't be much of a story if they didn't), the impossible curse that binds their lives together continues to hang over both their heads.

Breaking the curse is the driving force behind the entire book. The first task is completed rather quickly, but the remaining two are not so easily checked off the list. Throw in more assassins, more pirates, a hilarious yet deadly manticore, and the story gets busy, fast. The nice thing is, it doesn't feel busy. Unlike some fantasy novels I have read, the plot doesn't devolve into an epic, complicated mess with too many storylines and characters to keep track of. The world Cassandra Rose Clarke has created is very easy to dive into, and the writing is simply superb, filled with just the right amount of imagery and emotion to capture the hearts of readers. It certainly did mine!

Ananna is a bit more angst-ridden and insecure in this book, and at times I found myself missing the spirited heroine I met in Assassin's Curse.

3.0 out of 5 stars I hate to dislike this book March 25, 2014
By Leah
Format:Paperback
Alright so where to begin with this book...

The pros:

The book had an interesting premise
Good and likeable major characters (outside of the Main love leads)
Interesting plot

The cons

I am a very picky reader in a sense, especially when it comes to these kinds of books, Ananna and Naji ruined the good feel of the book for me, their love was a whirlwind and I am not one for this kind of stuff. Ananna, herself, really disappointed me in this book as well because in Assassins Curse, she was a pretty strong willed character, but in this book she became a whiny obnoxious teenager just because a Naji didn't return the feelings of her kiss. It's a shame because this couple really had potential, but it flopped horribly, most of the time and unfortunately, as I tried ever so hard to like this book, most of what I can remember from it is Naji this, Naji that, Naji won't return my feelings. Again this was the only problem I personally had with the book, the rest of it was fine, but this single con was just too much to bear after she moped about it for... over half the book so it's just simply a shame. If you are fine with this kind of thing, then you'll most likely enjoy the book, but for those that share similar pet peeves to mine, it's a book to avoid.

In a way both books are an amazing love story, but they were also so much more. Pirates, magic, assassins, beasts, friendship and adventure. A fun and wonderful story and very uniquely told.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book! March 14, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved The Pirate's Wish even more than The Assassin's Curse. Clarke is a talented author; her world building and characters are well created. I care about them and want to know what happens next. I can hardly wait for the next volume!
