Book Description

The Pity is an original script by 26 year-old Irish writer Colum Coomey. It was recently short-listed for the RTE PJ O'Connor Radio Awards 2013.

Brendan Sheehan finds himself in the back of a Garda car for the second night in a row. On Friday night Brendan is arrested for drunk-driving, after his girlfriend Michelle kicks him out of their home. He has an embarrassing encounter with local Gardaí and spends the Friday night in a cell.

On Saturday morning he returns to the house to speak to Michelle, but she’s not there. Their neighbour Sharon invites him in for tea and reveals that Michelle has been seeing another man, this leads to an intimate encounter between Brendan and Sharon.

Not wanting to return to his parent’s house, he visits his best friend Sean Sweeney and spends the day drinking and taking drugs. On Saturday night they end up in the local nightclub, Dixies, Brendan violently confronts the man that Michelle has been seeing. He is arrested again and has a bitter encounter with the same Gardaí.

He returns to his parent’s house on Sunday morning and tells them that he has been arrested for drunk-driving. His father reacts angrily and tells him that he will help him out for the last time.

Brendan leaves the house and meets his cousin Tom, a solicitor, to get an indication of the punishment he faces. Tom advises him that he may face a prison sentence and he should consider immigrating to Australia. Brendan takes a walk down to the river to consider his options.
