Editorial Reviews

Following in the success of recent RHI Westerns including Avenging Angel and Prairie Fever, The Pledge follows a country sheriff out for revenge. After the murder of his wife and son by an escaped criminal, Sheriff Matt Austin sets out to capture him only to find he's been hired by a greedy land baron seeking to take land from a widow and her son. Starring Luke Perry and C. Thomas Howell, The Pledge proves that in the American West, justice must be served.

Westerns are the Greek Tragedies of the movie world. Well done, they are human, gritty works of art. Done poorly, they can be melodrama. It is fortunate that there are enough of us left who remember the Westerns from the 50s and 60s and can work the formulas correctly. This is one of the good ones.

Matt Austin (Luke Perry) is an ex-sheriff in a town in Texas who has hung up his guns to live a peaceful life with his wife and son on his ranch. Unfortunately, he has some unfinished business who has just escaped from prison, in the person of Tate, whose brother Austin killed a few years before. Austin hears that Tate is loose; but in going looking for him, he is outthunk by Tate, who goes directly to Austin's ranch and murders Austin's family, and escapes again. Austin, decimated, dedicates his life to finding Tate and making him answer for his crimes.

The scene shifts to California, to a town run by an Oil Can Harry of a bad guy (C. Thomas Howell) named Mr. Horn. Mr Horn is trying to run a local Mexicano family off their land, where they have lived for 90 years, because they have something he wants; a bountiful spring, the major source of water in the area. Mr. Horn knows that if he controls the water, he will become the most powerful man in the area. He also knows he has a limited time to pull off his claim to the land; the tax assessors are on their way, and when they come, his claim will be negated. And, of course, he is encountering stiff opposition from the family, composed of a brother Eddie and his widowed sister and her boy. Mr Horn is getting very pushy.

As a last resort, Eddie - against his sister's wishes - rides to a nearby cesspit of a town full of roughnecks and gunmen to hire help in protecting their land.

The Spanish land grants were raided by the early eastern Americans
in the 1850's. In this story an family Rancho is being laid siege
by the local big land owner. First the brother is killed while trying to
recruit 'pistoleros' in a border town by a sheriff hunting the killers of his wife and child. He comes to the rancho and the sister and her son
remind him of his own lost family.
He and a few other good men make a stand.
In this one case the land is held, but in too many historical cases,
in the western states that wasn't the actual case?!

This is a great story about a retiring sheriff who accidently shoots an innocent man in a saloon. The movie brings forth many good values and the leading lady is beautiful and virtuous. If there was anything I could add it would be a sequel!

Luke Perry, he amazed me with his acting, playing a cowboy. I had never seen him in this type of movie. He should do alot more westerns, cause he made me believe he was a lawman back in those days. Not too many men can act, and look western, but he threw this performance out the park. So all you Luke Perry fans, and western movie watchers get this movie, it's super great. All the actors, were so good, that I couldn't stand the bad men, even thou they were playing the parts. You will watch it over, and over time after time. As my self being a great-grandma, this high stepping granny says you all are missing a great movie.. You won't be disappointed at all, Come on all You Grannys who love to watch all those men in tight blue jeans, and think your 20 again, you will love it......

I first saw this on TV and liked it. I love the beautiful settings in this western, and the scenery which is different from most. Best of all, I like Luke Perry and his acting. He has a handsome, rugged face, which has the capacity to look kind when needed, and positively hard and calculating when called for. That is an unusual quality and what adds to his acting ability. It is pretty much predictable, for which I would normally only give three stars, but the whole together, for me, makes it a four star film. If you are looking for a western with a difference, this isn't it, but if you are a fan of westerns, this one is great.

This is one of the better westerns you'll find, period. Great performances by Luke Perry as Sheriff Austin, C. Thomas Howell as the land baron possessed by greed, and Kim Coates as Tate, all around low life gunslinger and murderer (you'll recognize him from a similar role in Open Range).

The theme is a common one in the western genre told from a slightly different angle this time, Sheriff Austin (Perry) while out hunting escaped criminals, looses his wife and son, killed by those very criminals. He quits as sheriff and goes on the hunt for revenge, accidentally killing an innocent man. Out of remorse, he must help the family of this man defend against land hungry Lamar Horn (Howell) and his henchmen including bought and paid for town sheriff (not the same town) and including Tate (Coates), the murderer of the Austin family.

Very Good drama and action. Well told and paced, with logical progression. The only real complaint is one that is common to almost every film. At times, when normally people would offer a more complete explanation of pertinent things at the moment, for some reasons writers either "save" those explanations for a "later" event or exclude them all together. But that is common in the film industry. You will, however, enjoy this one. You will be happy you added it to your collection. Incidentally, this is included in a triple feature edition with 2 other good westerns starring Kevin Sorbo, Avenging Angel and Prairie Fever. Unless you like to have the individual art work/case for each film you can pick up the triple feature at a good value. Enjoy!
