Book Description

The Pocket Gastric Band Guide answers the most common questions asked by 'bandsters' - people with an adjustable gastric band. How do I know whether I need an adjustment? How can I reduce regurgitation and pain? What if I am not losing weight? What to do when foods get stuck? And much more. Practical smart advice solves these and many other everyday challenges that the gastric band tosses your way. This guide helps you deal with them. Written by a dietitian who has helped thousands of people who have had gastric banding achieve great results since the band arrived in Australia in 1996.

This pocket guide is a special selection of advice and information shared between thousands of 'bandsters' and dietitians at the Wesley Nutrition Centre.

Tips and quotes from fellow 'bandsters' are merged with practical smart advice that addresses everyday issues such as:

-what to do when foods get stuck
-impulse eating
-knowing when to have an adjustment
-what to do when weight loss stalls
-belching, burping and tummy rumbles
-guarding against sabotage
-breakfast solutions
-smart choices when eating out
-soliciting and accepting compliments
-nutritional concerns

It was first published as a hard copy in 2006 and has been updated many time. This digital version is the very latest edition. The feedback and comments from both experienced and novice 'bandster' clients as well as their surgeons, dietitians and psychologists has been positive.

"It's like you've been watching me and been writing about me! It mirrors and helps explain what I feel sometimes"
"...insightful. Are you sure you don't have a band as well?""
"confronting in parts, reality can be tough"
"...the quotes make me realise I am not alone. To see other people have the same thoughts and problems is reassuring."
"Every now and then I read this again because it makes it easier for me to understand my band"

The author is Trudy Williams. She is an award-winning dietitian and nutritionist. Trudy has presented at national and international bariatric surgery and dietetic conferences and workshops about diet and nutrition for gastric banding. She is a regular media commentator on nutrition issues.

I like this book because I needed some encouragement and reminders of the basics of banding. I am in need to lose more weight and I hope this helps.

More About the Author

Trudy Williams was born and raised in Australia. She's an award-winning dietitian, nutritionist and author.

Trudy was awarded the President's Award for Innovation for her book "this=that: a life-size photo guide to food serves" in 2005. This book was been expanded and revised in 2011. In 2010, she won Silver and was Highly Commended at the Australian Food Media Awards for the parents' edition called "this=that child size: a life-size photo guide to kids' food serves".

With more than 30 years experience as a real-world dietitian, Trudy studies the hard nutrition science and then translates it into everyday, practical advice that you can use. Trudy makes nutrition easy.

Trudy launched her own private dietetic clinic and consultancy more than 15 years ago. Before that she worked in adult and children's hospitals as a staff dietitian and then manager. She has taught at universities, consulted with restaurants, caterers and food industry, and conducted research. She has helped tens of thousands of people through her private clinics. Trudy hosted a talk-back nutrition show on ABC radio for more than 15 years and is a regular media commentator.

Trudy has a strong interest and special skills in weight management for both adults and children and this is reflected in the books she has written. She pioneered nutrition for adjustable gastric banding within Australia more than 15 years ago. She has presented scientific papers on food and nutrition for obesity management at international and national surgical and dietetic conferences.

Her academic qualifications are Bachelor of Science, Graduate Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics, and Graduate Diploma in Communication. She is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Accredited Nutritionist with the Dietitians Association of Australia and an international member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association).

In her down time, Trudy loves a challenge. Whether it's riding (falling off more often!) her mountain bike, hiking in the bush, climbing a rock face, picking up a new hobby (at the moment it's watercolours), trying to contort into a new yoga pose (flexibility needs much improvement), or designing and testing recipes in the kitchen for an up-coming book, Trudy enjoys a bit of fun.
