I've been waiting a long time for these shows, and it was worth the wait. When Shane MacGowan left the Pogues in 1991, I wouldn't have wagered much that he would celebrate a 35th birthday. Now, as he approaches a 55th birthday on Christmas day, we all get a wonderful present. Somehow Shane and the Pogues keep going. Phil Chevron called the band's 2011 Christmas tour of England, Scotland, and Ireland the "first farewell tour." The second farewell tour, dubbed "The Parting Glass," was three months later. In ten shows it covered six American cities. Spider Stacy told Billboard, "I think we are basically pretty certain this is the last tour of this type we'll be doing in the states." He attributed their packing it in to band fatigue, economics, and MacGowan. "We can't always entirely trust Shane to deliver the goods," he said. That tour closed in New York, after three shows, on St. Patrick's Day. I saw all three shows, and the Pogues were brilliant. So was MacGowan. He commanded the stage. His vocals were superb. He was as unimpaired as I'd ever seen him, until now. These Paris shows are even better. MacGowan seems as sober as he gets onstage, and the Pogues are in top form. If MacGowan can maintain this form he's got a few miles left in him. Every Pogues fan should own these recordings. They document the band while they are still, unbelievably, on top of their game. I was expecting something great considering it's a new release and they wouldn't release something awful but this is some top-notch stuff! The vocals are actually more bearable than I expected and the playing is superior to anything before.

I'm glad I bought this set over getting each separately. Quality case, printing, and the booklet is awesome. The 2nd DVD features are a cool addition as well. Really great stuff and well worth the price. They play all the hits and really do an amazing job. They can still shred.

If you're a fan and collector, buy this. No hesitation. It's amazing.

The Pogues in Paris Blue Ray DVD. Who would've thought that it is the French that would hold a 3 day sold out concert of these wonderful London-Irish lads? The crowd just goes nuts beginning to end. To make the show even more posh this time they are backed by a lovely 3 piece Brass section that makes, "Rainy Night In Soho", and the others, sound the way it always should. And its in this song Shane switches the lyric, " Theres a light I hold before me"...to "YOU'R the light I hold before me" as to make a I Love You even more emphasis on the song he wrote for the love of his life of nearly 30 years, Victoria. Filmed beautifully and the sound to match, this makes THE live must have Pogues album to date not to mention the ONLY Official one. Highlights- Kitty, Irish Rover, Bottle of Smoke, Poor Paddy on the Railway, Fairytale of New York duet with Jem's daughter, brings the spirit of Kristy McColl in the house. And of course Fiesta tray headspacking and all.
